I'm getting a sound (kind of like a loud diesel / whine slap like valve noise) while in Drive, when I accelerate quickly. Sounds kinda like air escaping, but I don't think that's quite it. Doesn't occur when the truck is in Park or Neutral, engine sounds fine without this noise - perhaps this is a normal sound or not? If I have to I'll make a .wav of it so you can hear what I'm hearing, don't know much more about it other than I'm staring to think the sound is comming from the center of the truck, but not really sure.

Any ideas? I think this post is rather vague, so I'll have to make a recording of the sound.

a recording would help, but sounds like either an exhaust leak or maybe the clogged oil pick up tube issue.

so, can I drop the pan and see the pickup right in there? Just changed my oil too. I'll make a recording of the sound soon

Check out the short clip I made of the noise >

valuez.com/videos/discoiinoise.wmv

it seems to be sort of a higher pitched valve noise, took her to the shop today with the idea that it may be the oil pickup tube and they told me it would be $600 to drop the pan and clean the pickup. I laughed at the guy and said screw it I'll do it myself I guess. Read other posts on the difficulty of actually doing this job and it doesn't seem like a 600 DOLLAR ONE at all 2 me. Of course there is the stuff in the way, but I've heard of one guy just jacking her up and dropping it without removing the control arm bushing? I dunno hope I'm on the right path. Any ideas on the noise? Don't think it's a normal one but never too sure

I listened to your sound bit.... that sounds like an exhaust leak to me.... I would check the exhaust manifolds for cracks (not likely unless the sound goes away when warm). The donut gasket between the manifold and the Y pipe.

I would also just do a general check of the system, or drive to midas or similar (they do free checks) find the problems and fix somewhere cheaper.

I discovered, in the fall, that running Seafoam through the intake results in a good test for the presence of exhaust leaks. There will be white smoke coming out of the engine compartment, and traceable back to bad gaskets, if you have exhaust issues. Plus, the Seafoam is good for the engine anyway

Great suggestion, I've been thinking about doing SeaFoam anyway and that would really be a good way to pinpoint any exaust leaks I may have. Thanks for that advise Moose!

Problem Solved: This morning I checked the exhaust, one side (pass) was making more noise than the other & I traced it easily with my hand (the ole ******' air test) to the spacer where the manifold meets the lower exhaust. Took out the 13mm and tightened them up - problem solved. I'm so stoked with my Rover, easy fixes are the best! I Think I'll give her a good SeaFoamin' this weekend too.
