Anyone ever have this happen to them? I always oil the o rings before installing the filter.

There’s a chance I made a mistake on something.

Either way, new filter is in and I grabbed some oil for an analysis.

Can't say I've seen that before, I also apply a small amount of oil before installation; perhaps apply some to the hole on the engine side as well to help ease the installation as you screw the filter in?

Looks like the o-ring is swollen.
Did you use penetrant oil to lube the o-ring?

I just lube it with new engine oil prior to installation.

Never have had this happen before, 12 oil changes and I’ve always run the same filter without a problem.

Either way, when I installed the new filter last night I pulled it out to make sure I didn’t crush the o ring or anything weird like that.

I’ll probably drive it around a few hundred miles and pull the filter to inspect.

@f1racer328 -

So when I first bought the truck (2010), and for about the first five years (2015), I ran engine oil and coolant analysis through Polaris Laboratories ( https://polarislabs.com/ ). Funny enough...I just went and bought another round of sample bottles from them and plan on doing some more testing after the big rebuild and see what we learn.

If it is of interest, I learned that regular oil changes with high quality oils mean there are no additional wear in the lubricants and such - even with what was then the "new" AJ133 engine (V8 5.0L).

Are you having your engine oil analyzed by a lab? If so, which one? I had a reasonably good experience with Polaris before so I just did the same thing but they are much more tailored for fleet management (i.e. large scale, commercial applications) rather than "enthusiasts" (super nerds?)

I’ve used Blackstone before and will be using them again. I’ll post the results in a few weeks when I get them back.

Thanks @f1racer328 !

Funny enough, and you can't make this up, Dave on his Youtube channel Dave's Auto, just released yesterday before I posted (in what looks like some sort of paid advertisement), another oil analysis lab he allegedly uses - "Speed Diagnosis dot com".

You can see his pitch about 1:30 at

Meanwhile - I look forward to your posts on your V8. That will give me somewhere to hang mine results as well!

I never posted my oil analysis from a decade plus ago on the forum (I still have them)...mostly because they were so good and nothing to report. It pains me to admit that I was presently surprised how well the engine performed - I was expecting some sort of problem / horror story. But the engine was working great.

We will see how things go now 15 years in, and after a major rebuild, and after I just shifted to a new product I purchased from Atlantic British - Liquid Moly Special Tech SAE 0W-20.*

So those are the motivations for me now:
how does this 0W-20 fare?
is that oil too thin?
are there metals now in there given the life of the engine or because of the rebuild?
how are the soot levels and whatnot?

Separately, back to your original post: I have never seen that issue with the o-ring. The trouble I have had with these filters is that if I get cheap ones (yes, I bought it on amazon 10 years ago...), then they don't seal well and then you have to over-tighten them so they don't leak (problem with those o-rings I think). But nothing ever came out looking like yours.

Lesson learned (yet again): just get the best filters and stuff you can (if you care).

Good luck with all!
