NHTSA Recall Number 21V-635

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2021/RCRIT-21V635-5779.pdf

My truck was subject to this recall and I had it performed by local JLR stealership 4 weeks ago.

Part of the reason for getting this done (includes fuel filter replacement), beyond the safety concerns, are long standing and storied lean code issues (separate thread).

Anyway, recall done, lean codes still exist. So finally decided to replace low pressure fuel pump, not really because I had solid evidence of failure, just very brief dips below ‘desired’ pressure showing up on Live data trace using GAP tool. TBH I didn’t think this was problem because only 0-20psi below desired and very briefly.

Removed tank, opened and found filter connected but unmounted (should clip into frame) found sloshing around in the tank and in following condition….

This is the one I took out of the fuel tank 4 weeks after the recall being completed.

This is a brand new filter, out the box.

I’m finding it hard to believe that this degree of discoloration and loss of markings would happen in 4 weeks. Would appreciate thoughts from others.

See pictures in NHTSA recall link for how it all goes together - cross section pictures. However, what I’m finding in my case is that when the filter is mounted in the correct way (location and rotation) the pipe between the pump and filter has far less room than shown in NHTSA pics and the pipe kinks as it fouls the bottom of the tank.

Maybe that is why it was unmounted? As I found it!

Thoughts?
Beyond “buy a Toyota”!
Is anyone else experiencing the pipe kinking issue?

Thanks @Kwakazaki2

I assume you have been following several other threads on this topic:

@gsxr has some great photos in his write-ups and my experience has been with discolored lines but no issues with kinks (I put a few photos of my work as well). That said, I have not done the upgrade but installed new ("Old") components as part of my build and services (fuel tank issues not over yet - I need to replace all the fuel level floats and sensors).

All that said, the lean codes could be from something entirely different.

I have heard that worn / fading High Pressure Fuel Pumps could cause those codes (which I guess throws the same code on the LR4 as the low pressure fuel pump sensor - which is what you are talking about here).

Hope that is useful and certainly interested in others knowledge and experience -
