I just got back from a week long trip to Moab to do some off-roading and had a blast. While driving on the interstate south out of Pueblo, Colorado, I experienced a loss of power while the vehicle was on cruise control. I was going up a slight incline and it felt as if the cruise control was turned off. I pushed on the accelorator and nothing happened. The speed kept decreasing even though I had the pedal to the floor. I had been going 75 - 80 MPH and could only go 55-60 up the hill. The transmission shifted to what seemed like 3rd gear, but wouldn't speed up. On the downhill side, I could get it up to speed (75-80), but it seemed sluggish. I then put the vehicle in manual shift mode and it seemed to do a little better, but with no sense of power. I stopped in Trinidad, Co and checked under the hood and everthing seemed all right. Decide to continue on my way and at one point had the check engine light flash yellow while trying to bring the vehicle above 60 mph. Backed off and the light went out. Didn't ever come on again that night. Made it to Amarillo, but couldn't pass any cars on the road because of the lack of power. The next day it seemed to drive ok on the highway.

While off-roading in Moab, did notice one time going up a steep incline that as I was giving the vehicle power under automatic mode and it just quit responding to my throtle input, as if I had let up on the throttle. The guy spotting me asked why I quit applying power as I was nearly over the top and I told him the power just shut down even though I hadn't let up on the throttle. Backed down and then tried the climb in manual shift mode and made the climb fine. He commented that several times it sounded as if the torque converter was racing back and forth trying to find a gear.

Never saw any fault lights or messages except for the one check engine light on the interstate. Makes we wonder if there is a limp mode incase the transmission gets too hot. Outside temp was in the 40-50 range so shouldn't have been too hot. Did drive 70-80 going from Grand Junction to Denver that morning, but didn't notice a loss of power. In some uphill spots along that portion of my trip, did notice that the engine speed sometimes was in the 4000 - 5000 range.

Will be taking it in later to have my 15,000 mile service and will have this looked at. Any thoughts or has anyone else experienced this?

Moab was a blast and my 2005 LR3 HSE was awsome. I do have HD rear end but say no problems with the rear locking diff.

Did you go on a group trip or on your own? Any pictures of your adventure?

Sorry to hear about your power/tranny problems. Poor reliability seems to be a common theme amongst LR owners.

I had a similar problem about 9 months ago.

Although I have the TDV6 it suffered a loss of power and regardless of sports mode the engine could hardly maintain any decent speed up the hills. I didn't have any warning lights at all.

The problem was loose connectors on the top of the transmission (back of the engine). It took the dealer 1.5 days to get to the connectors and had to remove parts off the top of the engine to get to the transmission. All fixed and never had the problem since.

Apparently the source of the fault was diagnosed using the WDS.

Software Recall

I just bought a 2005 LR3 that was never used. 1 week after having it all the warning lights on my dash went on and the car lost all power. The transmission fault light came on, the HDC fault light, the stabilization light and the car was stuck where it was. I got the car started again the next day and took it to my dealer and went over some of the possibilities from this forum. They made a few calls and said there is a software recall/error that has caused these faults. A new install of software and a replaced gas tank and the car drives better than ever. I run an electronics company, and I know first hand what a firmware upgrade can do for electronic systems. Sometimes they are worse, but this seemed to truly make a difference in the way the truck drives. I also noticed I am getting better MPG.

I took my DII to Canada this weekend. Put on a total of 1000+ miles. Here in NJ not much elavation changes. But on my way up north there where alot of highway hill climbs. I noticed also it struggles going up the hills. So what am I a looking at here? Anyone got any info on what it could be the problem? I am using 93 octane gas. I will check the plugs this weekend maybe that could be it. Is it tranny related? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you.
