Just bought my first Rover. A 1995 Disco I. A little background on me is: I've owned many BMW's, Jaguar's, Porsche's, Jeep's my interest was peaked by the Disco. I'm a Mechincal Engineering in ROchester, NY. We build OEM Machinery, so I know my way around a shop. Now back to my question.

I bought it cheap because it wasn't running right. Idle is very rough, cruise doesn't work, PO didn't take care of it. It has 120k miles. I'll start her up and the rpm starts at 1500 then slowly lowers to 800-900 then it begins to flutuate down to 500-600 and up to 1000. Sometimes it'll stall when I shift it to gear (its Automatic). Could be vacuum leak? Is there an Idle Stabilizer that may be sticking? Check engine light is on, I asume from this. Once I'm in gear and moving it runs fine. I assume because the vacuum overcomes the leaks when the acceleator is pressed. What lines tends to be the most problematic? Should they all be replaced at once? How many lines are there? Any help would be great. thanks all.

Start with the IAC / "Stepper motor" -- if you do a search on here you should find what you're looking for.

If not, post up.

I'm going to try reading the fault codes first. I have the box unclipped and pulled out from under the seat. There are wires headed into the bottom and a little thing on top, but I don't see how to readout the fault codes. What am I missing?

OK, now I realize how to read it. The big numbers on it are quite helpful once you turn the ignition on. Anywho, it comes up with Code 48, stepper motor. I'll start there.
