I own a 97 disco that has 100,000 miles with no mods. Over the last month it has been running worse and worse. It starts fine but any throttle and it back fires and wants to die. I had the codes read it said a o2 sensor was bad. I replaced the sensor but it did not fix the problem. I took out a spark plug and noticed they were very black and could be fouled so I replaced them. Finally the problem was fixed. I drove it around last nite for 30 minutes and parked it. This morning I got up to go to work and the problem is back. It idles but any throttle makes it back fire with no rpm change. I also tried a new fuel pump a week ago but that changed nothing. The weird thing is the Check engine light is not on and has only come on twice but went out over the last month. Any HELP would be great!!

Here are a couple of thoughts. One replace the fuel filter, not for this problem but because it is most likely plugged and restricting your power. ave you ever changed your plug wires, if not this is probably the main problem. If you haven't changed them let me know and I will tell you where to buy some good 8mm. Magnacor wires for less then the factory wires. If you replace the plug wires, do the plugs also if they have been that fouled they are not worth keeping.
Once you are done with all that buy 3 cans of SeaFoam from a Napa and I'll tell you how to real perk up your engine and decarbonize it at the same time.
Good luck,
Mike J.

OL here is what you do with 3 cans of SeaFoam, one in the fuel tank, one in the crank case after an oil change and one in the induction system/vacuum lines on the throttle body. Do it all at the same time them let it sit for 30 minutes, after that, go for a long hard drive. Don't let the excess smoke bother you, it will go away in 5 to 10 minutes of highway type speeds.
Aftewards, amybe 1000 miles later, check the oil and if it is dirty, change it cause the Seafoam will loosen up some s--t.
Any questions?

and one in the induction system/vacuum lines on the throttle body

So I assume you pull a vacum line, dip the end in the can, and run the engine allowing it to suck up the contents of then can? then turn it off and let it sit 30 minutes?

Yes, you might want to use a pair of pliars and restrict the flow of fluid into the intake, should take about 5 minutes to draw it in.
As for the Magnacors, I use http://www.offroadtuff.com/
They are a sponsor of our Rover Club, SCLR, and have always treaded us right. Make sure you do the 8mm. wires.
Good luck to both of you,
Mike J.

I've installed my new plug wires and changed the fuel filter but my original problem still exists. any throttle movement and it sputters and back fires. The check engine light doesn't come on. Could a sensor be my problem and if so wouldn't it show up as a code. Sometimes when I first start it the problem will be gone but once I turn it off and start it again after it warms up the problem returns.
