I am looking for a used vehicle. I was looking for a SUV that has the potential to tow, not huge & bulky with a more rugged look (since all the new mid size SUVs look like mini-vans without sliding doors). It will be used to commute, some towing, short travel, but minor off-roading.

I saw a 2005 LR3 SE (v8) with about 145K miles. Its fully loaded with brand new air ride suspension system. Its in great condition and has had two 177 (or 171) point inspections. It drove like a dream, Ive never drove anything so smooth. I even drove a 2016 Sorento (dont ask) later that day and it just didn't compare.

This would be my only vehicle, my commute is short (7 miles) so I am not concerned about gas mileage but my concern is reliability and price. The best I believe he will do is $11K.

Is this worth the price? Am I taking a high risk on reliability at this age and amount of miles?

Trust us, $3K per year in repairs and maintenance is the right figure. Control arms, bushings, tie rods, wheel hubs, differentials, brakes, tires, suspension compressor, AC parts, it all adds up.

You should look at roverman's LR3 which has 37K less miles for the same price. Better to buy one that has documented maintenance and was owned by a Land Rover enthusiast.

Do you have a link to the one you have for sale?

It's not for sale online. If you want PM me your email or phone # and I can send you a few details and pics - although I haven't detailed it yet so it's dirtier than the one you posted!

Personally, I can see the $3k happening easily, but not every year. I have spent $2k this year, and no more than $3k total since out of warranty in 2009. That's on what I consider repairs, not regular maintenance items like brakes and tires. I've been lucky, but bottom line is there are cheaper trucks to keep running, but none are as awesome :biggrin:

3k a year seems a bit high, unless you go to the dealer, then budget 500-1200 a visit, whether you need anything or not..

Remember that's an average. I don't think it's high. I do go to the dealer, but they treat me fairly. I don't think it would be much lower if I went to an indie and used equal parts.

$3-$4 k is an average a year, so some years you spend more than that on maintenance? How many years have you paid 3k-4k a year? Do you really think your dealer is treating you fairly? You don't think you could do better at an indie, but you haven't had any quotes... This just makes no sense to me how you can think this is normal.
