The "Sevice Engine" light on my 97 Discovery jsut came on. According the owner's manual, if ever a red light illuminates, you are not to drive the car. However, the manual says nothing about the Service Engine light being red, rather amber. And as an amber light, it says that the light merely advises you to have some emissions service done on the car. This light is supposed to come on automatically at 50,000 miles, according to the manual. I do not know of any multi-colored lights on the '97, so I am not sure how to interpret the manual.

I have 83,000 on the engine right now. The "check engine" light is also on, and a diagnostic has generally isolated this to be a misfiring cylinder. I will be taking the car in for extensive service shortly, but I am still concerned about this ambiguous, yet unsettling error message. Any ideas?

I called Land Rover's Roadside Assistance, by the way. The operator had absolutely no clue about the cars mechanically. Seemed all she knew how to do was call a tow truck.
