Tips for replacing vacuum advance

'94 V8i.

I need to replace my vacuum advance. It doesn't look like you can get the mounting screws off without pulling the entire distributor.

Once I pull the distributor, can the vacuum advance module be swapped out without taking apart the distributor itself? or do I need further dissassembly.

I'll mark the distributor before removing it so I can reinstall without having to mess with the timing.

OK, my experience with LR's is limited, but did you check the vacuum advance with a vacuum pump? I only ask because I have never had to change one on any vehicle. Is it broke?

It's a pretty common failure on the 3.9L V8i Land Rovers. Unfortunately it's a $100+ part to replace.

You can test it quite easily by putting a piece of clean vacuum line on the advance, sucking a little with your mouth, and then putting your tounge over the vacuum line and see if it holds vacuum. Very obvious in holding vacuum with the replacement unit on the workbench, no vacuum at all with the old unit.

Roger that. I guess I'm lucky that I don't have one on my disco, cause it would probably be broken.
I'll check my LR shop manual to see what they say for your engine.

The manual I have only goes down to the level of changing the entire distributor. Here is the blowup if it helps...
