Wow, those are huge, and mean looking. $265 per tire too. Well at least they've come down a little.

Craig,

I like the MT/Rs a lot....both for the size advantage and the traction. I basically feel like the LR3 cannot be stopped with those babies on; could be my undoing someday! I have only about 200 or 300 miles on them as I only put them on for trail runs and don't generally run them on the highway. That makes it hard to answer your third question, but from my limited experience they are noticably louder and sloppier on pavement.

I do indeed run the height sensor mod and occasionally still rub offroad...but not enough to make it a deterrent. On the road when no articulation is happening it's not an issue.

I only put the modified rods on when I hit the trails. So with daily driving I would not have them on. Have you run the MTR's without the modified rods to see what kind of issues with rubbing exist?

The only time I ran the MT/Rs without the mod-rods are when I first bought them. I drove around the block a few times and drove over a curb just for fun. I thought that they'd be okay and only got the rods for extra "insurance" clearance. I figured I'd be off-road in regular offroad height and only pop up as needed. I was surprised to find out just how often I'd be rubbing if I did that. Articulation is something ya might not think about but is happening A LOT on a trail versus on the pavement.

Plus, for me...once I got used to having the extra height, I didn't want to go back...now when I am offroad I'm just in (new) offroad height all the time.

So, my answer to your question is that you probably wouldn't want to run these tires without the mod-rods. You could get away with it but I don't think you could drive around with confidence. You may rub in reverse in normal height and Access height is really not usable.

When you are on the trails do you put the LR3 in (new) offroad height as I described above or do you sort of save that for when you need it?

Houm_WA,
That is great information and somewhat what I expected. I may need to reconsider what my options are. When I put the rod on the first few times I ran them as you have explained however the last few runs I just put it in extended and go with it. I also have had it high-centered and had it go into super extended without issue as well. The rod-mod rocks without question! I have also considered the new DuraTrac which has better load handling and is only 32.1" instead of 32.3" I know its not much but maybe its enough. I dont really want to run the mod all the time and dont want to go cutting on the frame either....

Yeah when it comes down to it I'd prefer having the ground clearance. Once the airbags are pumped up I don't think it's any sweat for the EAS to keep them full. I have only once had a fault and that was when I was screwing around with the heights instead of just letting the LR3 do its thing. I believe I was high-sided and trying to raise it while it was probably going to (new) extended mode which would've made it go to (new) super extended mode and it freaked out. I actually had the service guys read the residual code and it said that one of my sensors was out of range!

I actually think that is pretty cool...instead of the LR3 letting itself blow up its own airbag, it throws a fault. That sort of diagnosis has helped me understand faults and how to use them as information.

Anyway I digress. I agree that the rod-mod rocks. If I were you and weren't ready with a separate set of rims with the MT/Rs mounted on them I would probably pick a different tire that is more A/T like the BFGs or something. Or the Coopers!

ok, has anyone tried to get the cooper zeon LTZ 285/60-18 lately? I just got this message from discount tire direct and they no longer show up on the discount tire page in this size....

Good Morning,
We no longer carry the Cooper in that size.
Thank You, Ben

That's BS. I just picked up a set of four a couple months ago and a matching spare late last month. Their web page has never shown the 285/60, but if you go into the shop, they can get it for you.

Maybe so, although that would surprise me..... I am looking at getting a tire by Interco, called the M-16 which is pretty aggressive and is that same exact size. You might want to check it out. Interco makes Super Swamper's which are incredible off road tires, this M-16 is slightly more tame, but with a similar aggressive tread pattern! I might actually get 2 sets, one for my Disco, and one set for my Range:biggrin:

You just have to call them. check your local cooper dealer they are available form anyone who can order cooper. I saved a nice little bit of change shopping locally.

LROffroad- can you set up a link to the intercos m-16s you said 285-60-18?
I thought it was only avalabe in a 285-65-18 which would be a tad bigger than a 275-65-18 and thus to big for the LR3. Or am I mistaken?

Oddly enough I cannot find the size on their website, but I have an e-mail from a lady there that told me she has a "285/65r18 which is 32.59 in OD". I was interested in these so I contacted them and that is what she told me....... I might get them for my Range Rover and Discovery. I would post a link if it was on their site, but if I get them then I will definately try them out and put a video up:)

In the video of the week on my site the guy is using swamper's I think, and he is in one of the worst mud situations I have ever seen.... I think the M-16 might make a Land Rover unstopable!
