I have a 2003 range rover and just had the trans fail safe program warning come on while driving on the freeway. Shifted into maybe 4th gear? wont down shift from there. Shifts smooth and have not had a problem with it until now. All gears still work and no lag between shifts while driving. Any suggestions as to what it could be? I am at a complete loss... Im guessing electrical problem since mechanically shifts fine into all gears? HELP!

Have your battery tested I bet it is about to die.

The battery was low just replaced it yet still have a transmission light on and it goes right to the fail safe mode now instead of after 15 minutes of driving.

The new battery probably needs charged before all will be happy. Sadly most batteries off the shelf are not fully charged. Put it on the charger and see how it acts in the morning.

Just got a fault code read it turned out to be (Output speed sensor circuit range/performance) would the battery being low make that come up or do I most likely have another issue? Thanks for all the help!

Sorry for the delay (headache last night) Battery being low will cause all kinds of odd Transmission and other faults, First thing I check is battery on any Transmission Fault. And yes it can cause the speed sensor to act up.

Charged the battery overnight drove for about 15 minutes then right back to fail safe mode. I dropped it off at a shop today I have no idea what the problem would be if not electrical. Thanks again for the help

sorry couldn't help more.... 90% of the Trans issues are battery/power related.
