Tell the dealer and they will install some transmission software updates. They won't install them unless you ask because not every vehicle has the issue. That jerking drove me crazy for 18 months...now its gone.

The "head snap **** issue" has become increasingly worse in my 05' SE, so I took it in and got the proverbial “we cannot duplicate the problem you describe”. However you brakes are worn out and are not covered under the maintenance contract, blah, blah.

I inquired about the bulletin LA307-002 and was told, “Sir your vehicle has all of the latest software & patches already installed.”

What upsets me is that it seems like they are taking the stance of, since the latest software is loaded I cannot be having this issue.

I called LRNA and the girl said to me get this, “Sir what you like Land Rover NA to do for you”? How about fix my $50,000 SUV you idiot?

She is going to research the problem and call me back in 2 to 4 business days. Wow I feel so much better now.

Well I’m off to go get my perfect running LR3 with bad brakes

How many miles on the brakes?
I have the same head snap issue, I just live with it b/c the dealer "can't replicate". It'd be nice if they just said "yeah, we know about the problem but unbelievable as it seems just don't know how to fix it. Sorry"
Glad it's a lease.

23,000 on the brakes they don't look that bad to me, I will order the $339 kit form Atlantic British and do it myself.

They wanted just over $700 just to replace pads :ready:

I hear ya on the lease, 13 more months and I am done with my Land Rover Experience!

Driving bad-habits

Have you taken a tech for a ride? It may well be they can't dupe it.

I haven't driven our LR3 too much (about 2 hours, mostly hiway) but I didn't feel anything strange with the tranny. Usually with a V8 engine the trans is programmed for second gear starts as there is ample torque - just like my Porsche 928 or Audi.

I can make my Porsche 928GTS (an $80K car back in mid 90's) transmission slip and **** so hard you'll lose your fillings. I roll the car~ 5-10 mph so it's in 3rd or 4th. Then I hammer it which then gets the engine ahead of the tran's shift body. The trans shift body wants to drop it into first but there is lag because it is coming all the way down from 4th. In doing so there is a momentary loss of coupling which causes the engine revs to spike, then she grabs first and all hell breaks loose.

Could be a similar effect with the LR3. The LR3 trans will be electrically controlled so it should move faster.

I'll probably never be done with the LR experience, love em too much. I just don't like fixing them, so I'll continue leasing from here on out. Unless a few years down the road I'm hearing about how great the LR3s are holding up with over 75k miles or so...
Too bad about the brakes, my lease is to 30k...wonder if I can make it without replacing them???

I understand what you’re saying however when they reset the ECU the issue goes away totally and drives like it should for about 2-3 weeks.

The tech may very well have not experienced the issue if he test drove after he reset the ECU which according the paperwork looks to be the case.

If the problem returns I may just try to reset the ECU myself and see what happens. Hopefully disconnecting the battery will let me do so like on most every other vehicle. The service dept has bankers hours is about a 45min drive so getting there to drive a tech around is not always easy.

This problem has actually altered my driving style. I recently took a long trip in my wife’s Audi and found myself trying to mask the LR3’s trans snap problem in a car that shifts just fine. Kind of like if you drive a manual trans and jump in an auto and instinctively go to push the clutch in

I have had all the transmission ECU updates in my 2005 LR3 SE7, and the "rolling stop" transmission lash has never really gone away. BUT, and I apologize if someone has already posted this on this website, if you put the truck into SNOW/GRASS mode, the lash completely goes away. And, you can roll through all the toll booths you wish (for example).

GGS masks it becuase it starts out in second gear. If you sit with the car running in Drive and swith to GGS, you will feel a bump, and when you swith it back, it will bump again. At least in my car.

I feel no bump when I turn the terrain response knob. So, when I am entering a town or city with a lot of stopsigns or lights, I switch to GGS (so that I don't experience the lash). And, when I return to the highway, I switch it back to normal.
