A small , RED, I believe, box should be under the pass seat and you should see code numbers on its surface.

The only red box I saw under the passenger's seat was the box for the Service Engine light... the emissions control reminder box. This was next to the amplifier under the passenger seat.

Since I don't have an D1, I am going at this from what others have said which was the code display is under the pass seat and the servive reminder light is in the r/f pass kick panel.
I don't know what to say .

I found the box under the passenger seat. Its a black box with clear display on the front towards the rear seat.

No codes on display. I turned the vehicle on and the box under the passenger seat is blank. It turns on to 00 or 88, but that display goes off immediately. Other than that start-up charge on the LED, nothing else is on.

Is there some other way that I should be looking at codes?

Sounds like it is time to get it to a shop, have them plug in and see what show up while running.
Let us know how it goes.

Should I take it to the dealer? Or any independent shop should be able to help me with this? Do they need to have the AutoLogic computer to diagnose this?

Either way works, the independent would probably be cheaper and yes you nee AutoLogic, do you know of such a shop, if not here is their 1-800-533-2210 number call them for a shop name.
Good luck,
Mike J.
