I'm curious about the front runner rear ladder. The biggest appeal to me is the platform at the top of the ladder. I plan on being up and down a lot as I do a lot of photography and that would be an added value to me. Price is moot as I have seen the oem and front runner rear ladders for about the same price on eBay.

I also intend to use the ladder as a shooting platform for photography from time to time. I have the OEM ladder but have thought about trying to find some sort of platform I could place on the ladder. Also thinking about how to rig up something on my Yakima bars/basket for my tripod.

I have dabbled in a little photography myself. They had a neat airshow on the 4th of Jul this last year. I just stuck a camp chair on the chicken coop plastic flooring I have on my voyager rack. Sat down and enjoyed the show. I inspired a kid to hop up on top of a nearby minivan... ooops... it bent down.

Ouch. I guess I shouldn't chuckle.

Getting on the roof works well for fireworks, too. But as you said, you need to be on a good rack to be safe. I don't have something as strong as the Voyager rack but my Yakima crossbars and basket are good enough as long as I don't bounce around and I keep my with down. Generally I stand on the later and place my tripod/monopod on the basked or turn around and place it on the lowered hitch gate while I sit on the ladder. I don't do this a lot. Most photography doesn't need it as all. But sometimes a few more inches higher can give you a different perspective - or get you above clutter or people in front of you.

Hi,

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. I currently have the OEM ladder and read that the Front Runner Slimline II rack does not work with the OEM ladder. Which Front Runner roof rack do you have that works with the OEM ladder?
