I ordered my AMK replacement from LRDirect. It was the cheapest price delivered to my door in Canada from the UK, by a decent margin (few hundred dollars CAD).

Just noting here in case someone is reading this at a later date. :)

No to hijack this thread but wondering is there a normal 'sound' the system or compressor makes when it starts to go bad? I've noticed a whining noise coming from somewhere under the hood recently. For some reason I don't attribute it to the motor, the chain tensioner is another noise altogether...8 years old with 170K so can't complain so far, mostly all good.

Is the whining sound constant? It's my understanding that the compressor only runs intermittently, as needed...? Have you had any suspension fault messages display in the instrument cluster?

gsxr - appears to be intermittent as I notice it intermittently but...I've been hearing this strange noise for awhile so probably more constant than I give it credit for, I can't hear it while driving of course. No suspension faults, still goes down about 5 to 10 seconds after shutting off the motor.

The air compressor isn't under the hood; it's under the car, right in front of the driver-side rear tire.

I'd guess a whining sound under the hood could be the belt, or more likely one of the pulleys.

Hard to know without seeing it, though.

Back to the question about compressor noise. I don't know if this is common, but I have an intermittent fault "Only Normal Height Available" which goes away with the next ignition cycle / restart. But it only happens about once every 10 starts.

The compressor will sometimes be totally quiet, and other times is loud enough to be obvious from the driver seat... sounds like it's bogging down under heavy load before turning off. This is typically a minute or two after starting the engine, cold or hot. Sometimes, but not always, the loud / bogging compressor noise is followed by the "only normal height" fault.

I'm due to change the oil anyway, and while it's on the lift I plan to pull the cover and at least see what compressor is currently installed (Hitachi or AMK). 120kmi, and I don't know if the compressor is original.

Is this noise typical of a tired compressor? Anyone else BT/DT?

I don't recall my compressor making any strange noise before it went in my 2012. It just put up an orange triangle on the dash.

At the time, I was working at a location that required me to put the LR4 into access height every day to park in the garage, and it took a bit longer to raise it back into standard height once the error displayed. Searching the forums for the error code I was getting, I thought the problem was going to be more in the air lines or air tank somewhere, and not the compressor. It was still under CPO warranty, so I just took it in to my dealer, who wound up swapping out the compressor.

I have gone through 2-3 refurbished AMK's. They just die. No warning/sound.

Your whining sound could be your alternator.
