So my tailgate won't open anymore. When I press the fob or the button on the upper part I can here a click/thunk, but the upper part will not budge.

I am assuming this is probably the actuator located in the lower portion of the tailgate, but would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on what else it could be before I order the parts needed to fix it.

Most likely the “L” piece that attaches the cable to the actuator broke. It will be a pain to get into the tailgate to fix it though. Do a search on how to do this. While you’re in there I would install an emergency pull cable that allows you to release the hatch without the actuator.

Mine broke after I packed the entire LR4 with junk from cleaning out my mom's basement. Nothing like unloading all the stuff out the side rear doors.

Mine was under warranty and the tech at the dealer knew exactly where to drill a hole through the tailgate panel to release the tailgate. Dealer installed a new actuator and a new carpeted tailgate panel.

I have been trawling around looking for info on installing a manual release cable but I can't seem to find much. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Here is the link to the manual cable release install.

Here is the the cable mechanism on Amazon.

My tailgate has not broken but while I was adding dampening material in the tailgate to reduce sub woofer vibrations, I secured the connection between the actuator and the existing cable end. Yeah, it's that L shaped piece and it's known to break. The actuators go bad as well... I'll be doing the mod this summer.

This has happened to me several times. I just shut all doors and lock my car with the key fob. Wait about 10 seconds and unlock the car with the fob...works for mine at least.

It will eventually completely fail.

I was able to nurse mine along for a year or two, but one day my tricks stopped by working.

So I replaced the actuator and the latch while I was in there. Everything works now, but when I got in the vehicle I am getting a red warning light and a message saying the tailgate is open even though it is shut tight.

Any thoughts?

Gang,

I am going after the inside latch addition, and wanted to shoot some pictures up for posterity.. I found a different way to hook up the new cable- which requires almost no fabrication:

Push the new cable into the connector with the existing cable with a screwdriver:

Then pop the internal tabs out of the new cable bracket with a screwdriver, and mount the bracket below the actuator unit using the stock hardware. The assembly holds the new cable in place, and properly tensioned:

Easy peasy.
