Check the gel patch that the rearview mirror and rain sensor use. If it is not sealed smoothly then it could interpret the smuge as rain.

To my knowledge, the only "aftermarket" windshield that has the defrost elements is the Pilkington windshield, which I believe is the supplier for Land Rover OEM.
Probably not now, but a few years back, there was an offshore supplier of LR heated windscreens.

You could tell them by the copper coloured vertical buss bars visible on the left and right sides of the windscreen. (I note that you do not see anything like that on the Pilkington, only the fine heating wires if you look closely).

My take was that the copper bars were about the only thing one could see and the AS1 marking was just for decoration.

As such, I think you are correct; Pilkington is now the only "aftermarket" supplier of a viable heated windscreen for our 3's and 4's.

And yes, Pilkington is the factory supplier of the LR marked windscreens, also with the Opticool marking.

Oh man, @bbyer , I miss those little clear plastic clips that LR put in my 2005. Don't have them on the 2013. They were nice for holding parking permits and such without losing small cards and receipts down the dash...

Our Vin # just below has been blocked for about 2 years due to a parking pass that slipped down in there. I think that's against the law...

I have a Benson with the wires.

I have the same issue, the wipers set in auto act like intermittent wipers. I still have the original OEM Pilkington heated windshield and I still have this problem

Are your headlights working properly in the auto position? With the iid tool you can set the auto headlights to off and that kills the rain sensing wipers too. They both use the same sensor.

If you still have the original windscreen, the odds are that the glue that secures the optical rain sensor to the inside surface of the glass has let go.

There is a plastic clam shell that unsnaps into two halfs behind the interior rear view mirror that hides the sensor.

I suggest you unsnap it, (kind of just pulls apart), and see if there is something loose that looks like it should be glued to the interior surface of the glass. If so, then as an experiment, tape it to the glass and see if anything changes for the better.

If so, then go to a glass shop and get them to use optically correct glue to reattach the sensor.

Thanks for the reply, how exactly do you unsnap it? I can’t seem to get it out

Use something, maybe a flat blade screwdriver or nail file to pry the plastic halves apart. If your cover is per the jpg, just start at the top where the wires go in.

In my case, they almost fell apart when I started; in fact I wondered why they had not seperated going over a bump etc.
