LR4 Lovers,

I just purchased a 2013 LR4 this weekend!!! I’m completely in love with this vehicle. I’ve owned many others (trucks, suvs, etc.) and I’m pretty sure I’ll never get a different vehicle as long as I live! The only thing I’m upset about is that they don’t make this version anymore :/ and the new Discovery doesn’t come close (in my opinion). Anyways, on to my question...I’ve done a lot of reading (mostly on this forum) and I know there was or will be things that need to be done to this specific vehicle. It has 90k miles on it and I believe the air shocks have recently been replaced already and it has new front brake pads. I’m assuming that the notorious water pump has been replaced but not sure. What other items might I need to keep an eye on other than normal wear and tear??? (If there is already a thread on this I apologize)

Also, this thing tows my 4,000lb boat like a dream! However, I don’t have the key for the hitch (dealer didn’t have it). Is that a generic key pattern of sorts??? Can I get it online? [emoji51]

Thanks for your responses!!!

If new to me, I would do the following, and probably some others as I think about it:

Front Rear Differential Fluid
T-Case Fluid
Brake Fluid
Engine Oil and Filter
Transmission Fluid and Filter - Very unlikely this has been done previously, and it NEEDS it at 90K. I don't care what the manual says.
Coolant Flush and fill

Inspect:
All control arm suspension bushings. Look for damage. Jack the truck up and use prybar to check for play. Drive and listen for clunks.
Rear wheel knuckle bushings - 2 on each side
Sway bar bushings. These are likely shot if they are original.
Water pump. Check CLOSELY for signs of leakage.
Both accessory drive belts
Wheel bearings. Get the truck in the air and check for play.
Timing Chain. Listen very closely at startup for clunking. Pull oil fill cap and check tension on the chain you can see/touch.
Plastic coolant crossover pipes. you have 2. I would probably replace these preemptively on a new to me truck.
Battery condition - These trucks are not tolerant of a weak/failing battery
Sway bar end links - front and rear
Ball joints - upper and lower in front
Tie Rod end links in the front
Sunroof water drains - 2 front, 2 rear - make sure water flows through to underneath truck without leaks inside

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, but the above list probably covers 90% of the issues people post here about outside of tire/wheel issues.

They are great trucks, but at 90K you might be looking at a fair amount of work to get it shipshape if previous owners skimped on maintenance. Get it squared away, and it will serve you well.

On the hitch insert, I believe there is a roll pin that can be punched out to remove the locking mechanism if the key is not available.

Great list avslash...very comprehensive and I've had to do most of those items as I'm at 105K miles now.

I'll agree that the transmission fluid and filter is due. Use the kit from Atlantic British now and it will make the next transmission service so much easier.

I'm at 85k, owned mine for 3.5 years, and there's some things on that list I haven't even checked.

Brb; going to check sway bar bushings.

Excellent feed back, much appreciated! I’ll do most of this or all of this myself over the next 10-20k miles for sure! It’s a one owner vehicle and seems to be cared for but you never know for sure.
Dealer said the air suspension had been replaced recently? I looked at the shocks but couldn’t really tell. They changed the oil too and front brakes but that’s about it. Found both air filters dirty and ordered K&N filters to replace them. Most of that stuff listed is easy. I did all that on an armada I just sold including all four wheel bearing hubs. THAT’S something I don’t care to do for a while!

Got the hitch off, yeah took it apart and lubed everything and knocked the locked pin back so I won’t need a key. Thanks again for the advice!

Do not run the KN filters

DItto. I would never run an oiled filter in these.

And, with two air intakes and two air filters, I think our engines get all the air they can handle, which pretty much negates K&N's purported advantage.

Are the filters a concern because of possibly fowling the Mass airflow sensor?

They do not filter as well, potential to foul sensors and since there are two filters stock flows more than the engine can handle. If you plan on using your LR4 for its intended purpose I would be more concerned with filtering capability (dust) than flow.
