I have a question regarding oil level.

So I have a 2013 I picked up in 2015 with about 42k on it. I don’t drive it a lot but when I do I take it on ridiculous excursions such as Death Valley and camp in it for weeks at a time, so it has seen some harsh use. It has maybe 55k on it now after 5 years of ownership. That said I love this vehicle and would probably never get rid of it. I do my own oil with a mighty vac every other change. I had a dealer do the last at about 5k and now I’ll do mine. This way I save a little since it’s such an easy oil change but also when the dealer does it they pull the pan bolt and get the sludge. Either way about 5-6k between changes with Castrol recommended 5w 20.

I recently moved back to the east coast and have an incline driveway. One day with the engine facing up incline I started the truck and heard what did actually sound like that timing chain slap. But it was cold out and it eventually went away say after 30 seconds. Then I realized that due to the incline I just do not think that the oil gets to the front of the motor on ignition where the guides are.

To test this I parked it flat and never heard the sound again. I also park it with the motor facing down the incline and never heard it again.

Any thoughts? I feel like I would eventually get a camshaft position sensor error if this thing was going to jump teeth. But to be honest I haven’t had any problems and I don’t hear this sound since I have not parked it up and incline.

That sounds odd. On a vehicle like an LR4 I'd be surprised if the lubricating system was not designed to handle inclines. Could the oil pump be faulty?

Or just typical cold startup on incline although mine has never done that even before timing updates. I would assume low oil or improper viscosity.

The levels have always been ok on the cluster. That said I did do a lot of towing cross country, was ******* the trans for sure through the mountains last summer. Might have eaten some oil.

I will do a change and park it on an incline nose up to see if I hear it again. If anything yes I thought it was low oil but I don’t totally trust that digital dipstick.

Sounds weird. The LR4 has a bigger sump than the Jag equivalents to handle more extreme angles.

Thanks for the reply, hickersb.

I'm not so much concerned with the resolution to the case, but whether Jaguar has resolved the timing chain/tensioner issue. Having owned the 13 XKR I know what a fabulous engine that is and would like to be able to consider a later 5.0L Gen III car, but I'm not about to take a chance on an engine failure or even the expense of having the chains replaced. I love my Jaguars, but I've had to go round and round with them before on repairs for known issues. This is a known issue, 2 re-designs and I think they need to come clean or at least let their customers know they've resolved the issue. They definitely are not customer/enthusiast centric. They seem to cater to the first buyer. After that you're on your own.
My opinion and experience..........

For those of us with GDI engines should we be moving to ILSAC GF-6A spec oil?

Example: https://www.amsoil.com/p/oe-0w-20-synthetic-motor-oil-oez/

At that price, I'd say that's their least expensive oil. If I were you, I would look up your particular vehicle and see if there is a recommendation. There was no recommendation by Amsoil at that time. However, I just checked and they now have this recommendation. https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-...0l-8-cyl-engine-code-dohc-d/?volume=us-volume
Signature Series is Amsoil's best and I would and do, go with their recommendations. It is in all my cars and I've used Amsoil since about 1975.

You do know that most if not all dealers use a vac system to change the oil. Have they been charging you for drain plugs and washers?
