I need suggestions of what to look for to fix this annoying rattle getting in my 2011 LR4.

Ive been trying to track down a high pitched mettalic rattling sound, similar to that of a loose heat shield.

It is very evident at lower speeds (10-40mph), coming from the rear passenger side, under the car. Not sure it it is suspension related, but it is recreated whenever i hit a bump with the rear passenger tire.

so far ive...
1.replaced the shock - for unrelated reason. verified all top and bottom bolts are tight

2.poked and prodded around the underside, hitting random parts firmly to see if there is something loose. nothing obvious, everything sound solid when i hit it.

3. zip tied anything that could have possibly hit against the underside. this pretty much means all of the hoses/wiring/cables that run along by the rear transfer case and the fuel lines.

3. checked the brake dust shield for looseness.

4. checked the brake caliper. it has a minor amount of in/out play, equal to the driver side. assumed normal since disc brakes "float". bolts are tight.

5. removed spare tire. made sure the cable/holder is retracted fully and tight.

6. pried around at the control arms. all bushing seems good. the control arm at passenger rear appears newer than the rest. assumed it has been replaced recently, prior to my ownership.

7. replaced sway bar bushings.

8. inspected sway bar end link. appears good, no sign of play when pried against it. <- this still concerns me though as it seems like the most possible problem.

9. knocked around at the wheel well, making sure there is nothing hitting the inside of it. i did not remove the wheel well though.

10. verified sound is there when suspension is in access, normal, and high modes.

None of the above has changed the sound.

again, sound is obvious if hit passenger rear hits a bump. makes me think its something suspension related. but could also be just something lose in that area, and the sudden movement makes it rattle.

any ideas?

Weren't there some guys at one point that were having trouble with a cracked mounting bracket for a transmission heat shield?

It all runs together after a while, but that popped into my head.

i can definitely eliminate that since my trans doesn't have a heat shield. maybe its missing? or an omitted option on some models? either way, not there.
thanks though.

After more knocking around under the car, I've found a rattle ontop of the gas tank, of between the gas tank and bottom shield.

Sounds like maybe a rock/pebble/screw/socket is bouncing and rolling around.

Really annoying, but I guess I'll live with it. Dont want to drop the tank.

Still not sure if this is the rattle I'm looking for, since it's not as high pitched as I was expecting, but its somthing.

I was going to guess sway bar link but you covered that.

see post above....this is pretty much whats going on. except instead of frame, i think its between the gas tank and underside of body.

with that said, even though i found A rattle, im still not convinced this is the one im looking for. the sound im hearing is more "tinny" than what i can recreate by knocking on the bottom of the gas tank.

My high pitched rattling sound at the passenger side rear was the speaker in the back pillar. 2 of the 3 plastic mounts had broken off so it kept rattling inside the metal cut out. I used JB Weld to glue it to the mounting area. It took me forever to find this annoying rattle. I finally had my wife drive around on rough roads while I sat in the way back.

I recall a similar, almost bell-like ringing noise that I had in my '07 RR. I thought I was going nuts. We finally diagnosed that one of my lug nuts had a loose cap that was literally ringing like a bell as I drove. I had probably had a tire rotation or brake service and the thing was overtightened or otherwise loosened/damaged during the service. Thanks for that inexplicable capped design, LR.

Go around and inspect those when you get a chance. Maybe tap them with a rubber mallet or even your fingertip.

This all reminds me that I need to get the specs on a set of Gorilla lug nuts for my 2013 LR4. I keep meaning to do it but got confused with the size I need.

I didnt even think to check that, but it isnt relevant since i replaced my lug nuts with "solid" nuts...no SS caps anymore.
the reason for this was unrelated to my rattle noise...i was just tired of the slightly swelled/deformed nuts always getting stuck on the socket when i removed them

thanks for the suggestion
