Crazy to consider new engine in a 2016 LR4?

I’m officially “Ridin’ with the Devil”. Specifically, the Blue Devil Pour n Go head gasket sealer. It’s the consistency of water and crystallizes with extreme heat. I removed the upper radiator hose on the passenger side, poured the bottle into the hose, reconnected to the radiator, and let the car idle for an hour.

I’ve taken a few short trips monitoring the temps on the GAP tool and they hover around 205F. It’s only been a day, but it appears to be working, and I get to keep $25k. For now…

My LR4s new nickname is “The Queens Gambit. Risky. Classy. Unpredictable.”

Haha - love it. What specific issues / symptoms were you having with your LR4? Was your engine overheating before this? Was it only noticeable using the GAP tool or was the temperature gauge on the front display spiking?

I really want two joke products for my LR4.

1. A start/stop button that is either "finger's crossed" or "hands together prayer" emoji.

2. A trailer hitch brake light that is the universal check engine symbol.
Funny as hell! I joked with my wife and told her the rover has a warning light on so it may be time for it to go. Sent her a pic of tire pressure sensor warning light.

I just purchased it last month, so I don’t have much personal history, but I’d get a low coolant error error. When I’d take off the cap of the reservoir it would release a lot of pressure and fill back up. This would continue about every week. I first replaced the reservoir cap, then the reservoir itself, and was still in the process of trying to find the root cause. No overheating, although in hindsight 230F was above normal operating temperature. Now it’s just over 200F.

It finally overheated in a national park out of state while going up a mountain. I had it towed to the dealership and they performed a block test, blue fluid turns green fluid, and confirmed a head gasket leak. I bought the vehicle private party, but specifically had a pre-purchase inspection done by the dealership to avoid this very issue. $500 to point out cosmetic blemishes and worn brakes. FML

I’ve been driving it around all day today, ambient temp outside is 90F, and it’s holding steady at about 205F with the AC running.

That sucks. I think that combustion test should be number 1 on the checklist for anybody buying an LR4 - seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

How did you determine the engine was overheating going up the grade?

Did they replace the split Y pipe under the super charger when they replaced the front crossover pipes?

I’m currently rebuilding the coolant system on my 2015 LR4.

Some repair shops will fix head gaskets. If US based, the shop I know in Atlanta GA sends them off to get cylinder heads resurfaced. Shop is called Buckheads Imports.

Would love to know how your combustion test turned out.

Not sure if this is directed at me or another poster in this thread. Can't answer for sure on the split Y pipe when I had my initial coolant system repairs - I was told they were pretty much doing all the pipes and such. The combustion test did indicate there was exhaust getting into the coolant system. He showed me a video of the chemical changing colors. Honestly it was hard for me to tell as the color didn't seem to change that much, but I sent that video to a different mechanic and he agreed that the test indicated a likely blown head gasket or warped cylinder.

I know there are shops that will attempt to repair the head gasket - just heard that the long term success rate isn't that high. Although I assume if done correctly, you get most of the benefit of a fully remanufactured engine - just not sure if it is worth the risk on these engines.
