Crazy to consider new engine in a 2016 LR4?

How did you determine the engine was overheating going up the grade?
A dash message saying it was overheating, followed by puking coolant all over the road.

Unfortunately, I’m back to the system being pressurized after driving around for an hour. It’ll idle just fine in the driveway, no change in coolant level, but after driving around the block several times, the coolant level drops because the reservoir becomes pressurized. Take off the cap - and it magically refills itself.

Oh well. Blue Devil was worth a shot.

Ah, yeah that isn't just a GAP reading. Did the temperature needle move at all? Mine tells me if its cold, that is about all but I'm wondering if it actually moves up from mid-point lol.

Sorry about your misfortune. I had a lot of problems getting mine sorted. Never had suck a terrible experience but when I look back in time all my vehicles have been new since 1995 so I used the warranty. Then I did all my own work on vehicles outside of warranty. Now I'm not doing it that way and shops have taken me for a ride repeatedly like Kensington Motorcars. The local Land Rover dealer quoted me $3k to do the chain, I knew better on that offer. I spent 3 months trying to find a shop. I'm starting to think part of the problem might be Las Vegas business culture, but I still think there might be a lagit shop out there I just haven't found them yet.

Yeah, the temp gauge moved, but the middle is roughly 200-230F, and the top half is 230-260F. Moving from 230F (fine) to 260F (overheat) is only seconds. In reality, I’ve been troubleshooting a pressurized coolant reservoir for the two months I’ve owned it, so I’m I’m certain it was overheated prior to my ownership and had a bad head gasket, so who knows how bad it was previously overheated.

I’m having a fresh reman engine installed by a reputable Land Rover shop in late August. $22k but does come with a 3 year warranty.

I seriously thought about buying a new LR4 for $15k, but I just installed a new factory heated windshield ($2k), lower control arms and alignment ($1.5K). I could swap over the new brakes, plugs, coils, filters, wipers, wheels, and tires from the current truck, but I’d still be losing $10k after disposing of it wholesale. The new LR4 would have nearly 100k miles with the same weak points, and may end up needing expensive engine work just the
same.

For a $12k difference, I keep what I have and benefit from a 0 mile engine, with 3 year piece of mind, upgrade to aluminum coolant pipes, and can do 5K oil changes from the beginning. Under the current circumstance and the hand I was dealt …that’s my play. Current truck is a HSE Lux with locking rear differential and no dents. It’s respectable enough to save.

That was the cost for a reman engine from Land Rover.
When buying one of those motors from a dealership, what kind of warranty would it come with? Is there a difference in warranty if installed at the dealership versus purchased by a 3rd party shop and installed by them?

My rear crossover was replaced with upgraded P/N LR122710 (previously LR109401) just a few thousand miles ago and is now leaking. If you reach down around the rear by the firewall and feel the plastic crossover seam you can check for leaks - I have a small leak on both sides, but mostly from the passenger side.

Quick update - went ahead and got the engine replaced (nothing exotic - factory remanufactured V6). Had been driving it and topping off the coolant every now and then, but was starting to lose coolant a lot faster so bit the bullet and went for it. Hopefully will last for a long time! Thanks for all the help / advice.

I had the engine replaced (on extended warranty) on the LR2 by LR. While they were in there they replaced a bunch of stuff, n/c. Best service I ever had.

Hey! How was your engine replacement process like? Did you just go somewhere and they did all the work? Or did you have to find the engine yourself, etc. can I ask how much it ended up costing you? I’ve been obsessed with the Kaikoura LR4 but have not had any luck finding one in decent condition so I’m trying to see how feasible it is to buy a bad one and do a replacement on the engine. Thank you in advance.

Mine was done at the LR Dealer. They have remanufactured engines and they come with warranty. But I didn't pay a cent.
I know others that have done the same thing. The dealer did extra things at no charge while they had it all apart. Three weeks later, Vroom! During the wait time, I had a loaner.
