My 2012 still has the 2012 maps and nav system. I wouldn’t care so much except that it tried to add three hours to an already 6-hour drive from houston to El Dorado, Arkansas.

this has made me wonder if I should just use google maps and/or Waze, or if I shoukd drop the $200 and get the update for my navigation system.

has anyone gotten the upgrade? What all does it upgrade? Just the maps, or is it a new interface as well? Does it use a better system for finding routes? Does it compare to google maps, Waze, or other such Mobile apps?

should i do it, or are my $200 better spent elsewhere? Keep in mind, i drive long distances bc of work and prefer to have a back-up to my iphone gps.

Fwiw, I never use the navigation system for actual navigation. The phone does this(Gmaps and/or Waze) and I use the factory system just to see where i am at any given time, on the map. For places outside cell service, Gmaps allows you to download maps. As far as the upgrade, I think it gives you updated maps and routes but does not change the interface, which is ancient. It was(and is) dead in the water when it came out, as with most factory nav systems of that era.

Just use your phone for nav. It takes multiple steps just to enter a destination into the LR nav. (Hint: start with the state and work backwards)

I never knew how outdated the LR4 nav was until I experienced the Garmin 3D nav in our Honda Passport.

Ditto.

I have never heard anyone praise the OEM Nav system. I run with a separate hand-held GPS as backup to my phone. Also run something that has offline capability like Gaia.

I would be perfectly happy if there was some hack to just get my dash screen to mirror my phone display.
