If you're having to recharge the system periodically, you have a leak. What's most likely happening is your system is cutting out due to low suction pressure. It's a safety feature to help the compressor from going out. Best bet is to take it to a certified A/C repair facility and have them pinpoint the leak, repair it, replace your drier, vacuum down your system to 300 microns (99.99% vacuum) to ensure the leak is repaired, recharge your system, and send you on your way.

What's happening, when you're having to recharge your system is, not only are yo losing refrigerant, you're also more importantly losing oil. The oil lubricates the compressor. So low refrigerant charge and low oil volume go hand in hand. That's when A/C repairs become very expensive with compressor replacement etc.

I'd say for the time being, shoot your system with the "Charge in a can product." It's definitely not going to hurt, since you,re also adding oil. But for the longevity of your A/C system, have it professionally repaired as soon as you can.
