Wow, what a saga! Sorry to hear of your woes. Like you, I'm the type who just wants things "right", and I'll tenaciously work on the problem until it is fixed. Trouble is, with a Rover motor, there's just lots of things that can go wrong. Like for example, in your case, I was just about to suggest that you might have a slipped cylinder liner.
Happened to me a year ago. Losing lots of coolant, yet the engine oil is clean and same with coolant. But the big white cloud of sweet smelling steam coming out of the exhaust in the morning left me with no uncertain doubt that it was leaking big time.
In the end, I had to get the block out, stripped and fitted with top hat liners.
So far so good, but it cost much coin, almost to the value of the vehicle itself. Nuts eh?
Now the motor seems to be running good, but for how long?
