After blowing out a head gasket, I decided to just buy another good used engine rather than trying to repair mine. While searching, someone told me that he thought that there is a Ford engine that is almost exactly the same engine that comes with the LR3. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Try checking for the hoses connected to the thermostat if thermostat is opening up and working... I had the same problem with one of my previous D2 and one of my LR3, I bought a bnew thermostat from the dealer but was defective, well not actually defective, probably just needed a break-in...
I boiled the thermostat in water first then install it on the truck, making sure it’s working fine after seeing that it opens up fine and won’t get stuck..

Here’s a video(gif) and photos from the D2 thermostat... observe the water level..

Hope this helps!
