I purchased a 95 discovery a year ago and have put in a new fan clutch, overflow tank, new water pump, new battery, new alternator, had the engine timing adjusted, new thermometer, radiator work, spark plugs, etc. I live in the British Virign Islands, a very expensive place to try and find a good mechanic. I believe the above fixes included 3 different mechanics and at least 12 different visits. After thinking that I finally fixed the overheating problem, I now have a new problem and hesitate to take it back to the mechanic before I understand a little more. After getting the alterator replaced last week, I now can barely make it up the hills around here, which are plenty. It seems like it just isn't going to make it with the gas to the floor. I also noticed the tachometer isn't working either. Any suggestion for the hopeful learner?

Tach not working is the wire on the back of the altenator either is not connected or they didn't put in the right alternator and no place to connect. (small white wire if I recall correctly)

When you say it will not make it up the hills with the gas to the floor, does it seem like the engine doesn't have power, or the engine is reving, but Disco just isn't going.

If no power, I would start with a new fuel filter, and check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail to see if the fuel pump may be having issues.

fuel filter and pump may also be causing the overheating issues.... engine may be running way too lean.
