96 Disco tach and battery light

My 96 disco just started with the tachometer stopping and going when the engine is hot or it's hot outside. Now when this ocurrs I have noticed the battery light comes on and when it does the vehicle will not run with the + cable off.
Does anyone know what is causing this?

Better go have your electrical charging system tested, voltage should be between 13.6 and 14.4 voltage.
Bad alternator will **** the tack.
