A new Service Engine Soon flashing thread!

Hi All,

I have, of course, read as many threads as my search would uncover, regarding the Service Engine Soon light flashing, and wondered if anyone has new info since then.

I notice what will happen is it will be off for awhile, day or 2 perhaps, then it will start flashing, 6 times then solid. A few miles down the road, 6 more flashes then solid. It eventually settles at solid. today it flashed 18 times, then solid.

The interesting thing is that the mileage seems to be stable, about 14 - 15, perhaps a little lower now that I am using A/C, and I don't notice any change in the performance etc.

Is there some way to extrapolate by the number of times it flashes what it is trying to tell you? Its approaching 70K miles, so I figured it was just saying time to bring it in, but thought i would pose this question.

Have you had the codes for the OBDII checked? If not, that is the first thing I would do. It sounds like the Rover is trying to tell you something... just run by your local Autozone and have them read the codes, write them down and maybe we can help further.


And before anyone says the service engine soon light can be disconnected, make sure you notice this is a D2, not a D1.

Yeah, guess I better do that. i can't find the location of the OBDII plug in the RAVE CD, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks!

If yours is a D2 it will be behind the plastic/cardboard cover under the dash on the driver's side. It should be attached to the cover so that you do not have to take it off. Mine is not, so I have to take the cover off. Pretty easy to do though.

Mine was flashing like that and giving o2 errors.. I thought maybe the seafoam had coated them with goo or something and pulled them all out to check them and they were clean. Somehow they were not plugged in solidly is the only thing I can figure because It went away completely after I reinstalled them.

well, since posting, i have gone ahead and run a couple of tanks of Premium.. I had been getting by on regular for awhile. at least for today the light has not come up. Interesting

Update - the light kept coming back on, so i got the OBDII reader. P0304 - cyl. 4 misfire. This last weekend, I replaced the sparkplugs and ran some seafoam thru the intake, and one in the tank. After awhile, the light went out, and it has been out for 3 days and counting. I also ordered a set of magnecor 8mm's, so will probably stick those in this weekend.

Yup, the forum's always a big help... i was going nuts when it was out for those few days, what was the deal anyone know? BTW, going on 4 days with the light out. one more question, when i go to remove the intake manifold to get to the wires at the coil end, is it likely that i will be able to get that gasket off in one piece, or should i have a new one on hand? or does anyone know of a special trick that i can use to get to them without having to pull the plenum? Thanks again!
