Hey guys.

I've got a '96 DI with manual trans (US)

This past summer I had the brakes completely redone, rotors, fluid flush all that. That wasn't a cheap job to say the least.

I figured that would take care of the problem that I had before the brakes were redone, but now that the first snow is on the ground, I've realized that it has not.

What happens, is when the ABS activates, it GRINDS like heck. I can feel it in my foot on the brake, as well as hear it.

If I hadn't just gotten the brakes all redone, I'd say the brakes were just shot.

Any ideas? my wife drives this thing every day and I really don't want her getting in trouble in the snow, and she refuses to drive my soft top Jeep ;)

Before I disconnected the ABS from my 96 Disco, it made the same kind of noise. The pump is really loud in that system, but unless you're losing braking ability there's nothing wrong.

The first car I drove with ABS was a 1991 Honda Accord, which made the Rover seem quiet. As long as it's pulsing (which you can feel in the pedal as well) it's working.

thing is, when the ABS kicks in, it seems like I slide more:

for example, if I'm on snow and I press the brakes, I'll just slide, even thought the ABS is pulsing and grinding. if I use the hand brake to assist, the vehicle stops nicely.

Yeah, that's what started to happen with mine, leading me to disconnect. At least now I expect to slide...

Acually your probably not sliding, but just not stopping.... that is what ABS is for you know to keep you from sliding... or stopping for that matter you know it is safer to just roll into the items that jumps out in front.

I have a 98 Disco ES and frankly the ABS is a liability on dirt. Having come from a BMW 525 with ABS which stopped on a dime on gravel or tar I was horrified the first time I had to brake ******* loose stuff ith the Disco only to find 2 tons of metal not even slowing down! It was down into 2nd (auto) and handbrake and foot flat on the brake that finally got me slowed down to a safe speed. Ever since then I've been particularly careful on loose surfaces and hope that anyone else driving a Disco with ABS does likwise!!

So then seriously... should I be disabling this ABS? Any caveats?

As a whole it would be not be legel for anyone of us to suggest you disable your ABS... you have to remember that if we would suggest this that we would be liable for any issues that may be caused.

What I can say is that the only caveat is that in snow, mud, gravel, you have a better chance of stopping with the ABS disabled.

But on Dry or even wet giving the fact that the ABS may acually work, you will stop much better with ABS, But I haven't seen the ABS work correctly yet on the D1... so it is up to you to make this decision..

Mine has been disabled for over a year now, and the only thing that scares me is the D1 stops when I put the brake on.... very scary  where before I was lucky to stop anywhere I put on the brakes, and my ABS light never came on until I disabled it. Still haven't pulled that bulb yet.

I agree. I certainly would not advise anyone to disable the ABS for a multitude of reasons. My post was intended to reflect my personal experience, which is based in part on disabling the ABS.
