Group buy? Put me down for one ;)

I think we're all going to need a breather after this thread

Seriously though, good info. Going to add this to the next visit.

That new breather cap is a $12 - $15 part. You should have 'em fit it to your diff. I had my rear diff fluid replaced at 75k and my SA said it looked fine. I'm not nearly as worried about the rear as I am the front because it has been such a prevalent failure.

Regardless of the flluid condition in the front diff I'm having the new cap fitted....call it a $155 Flu shot for my LR3.

What does it look like? The breather hose on mine runs right up next to the fluid reservoirs in the engine compartment where the breather cap is so it is an easy swap. Or I could just cut the top off the existing to allow more pressure release.

How do you tell if you have a new one or not?

Just pull the valve off the tube end . As long as the pipe remains above
water level , nothing will ingress.

I don't have the details. I mean, I listened as Dave at Flatirons explained in great detail, but I've never seen these parts so I was "listening blind." I'm sure he could explain this much better than I could attempt to.

UPDATE: Diff oil looked good (tech showed it to me) and they replaced the cap no problems. Sounds like it is indeed on the end of the breather tube and is probably an easy job to replace.

...but for $108 I got fresh diff oil and the TSB performed as well. I'm happy to have taken that preventative step.

I never saw it. Just call Dave at Flat Irons....he'll give you all the info you need. I think you can just Google "Land Rover Flat Irons" and it will get you the contact info.

I proactively replaced the front/rear diff oil, along with the transfer case oil, earlier than the recommended interval. This is probably the best (and least costly) option to extend the life of these components.

Wonder if the LR4 has the same part numbers, and/or if they were reworked for improved durability.

Was this DIY or did you take it in?

If DIY - what fluid did you use? I know the recommended is the SAF XO... I actually have 1 quart of the stuff from the dealer, and it says "special" gear lube 75w90 synthetic.

Does anyone know if this really is special or if a Royal Purple/Mobil 1 quality 75w90 synthetic will work?
