Hey everyone, this is more to give you guys awareness of what happened to my LR4 and to hopefully prevent this from happening to you guys. I had 126K miles on my truck. The timing chain guides/tensioner was never touched, all original. I had no slack in the chain to my knowledge and smooth quiet idles (cold starts/warmed up). I religiously changed the oil every 6 months or 5K miles. I figured i would tackle the chains once i started hearing the rattling or if i got any codes indicating the timing was slightly off. Anyways i was on the merrit pkwy in CT and i was driving it pretty hard. I had it in sport mode and drove it pretty hard the entire trip, not going to lie. After about 2 hours of driving there was traffic on the pwky so i slowed down to a standstill and basically rolled for another 10 mins. Then once traffic cleared up i started driving normally (still in sport mode) and all of a sudden a jolt and power steering/engine went out. I pulled over and oil was spewing out the bottom. Pretty catastrophic failure. My guess is the guides or something failed and the engine went kaput. Anyways, i did all other major services only a few months ago (tranny seals and fluid/filter, front & rear diff fluid change, transfer case, control arms, all 4 oem air struts). Basically the car is well maintained but engine is done. I have no idea what to do next with it. I have a 2014 range supercharged LWB so i’m not looking to put anymore money into this LR4. If anyone is interested in it give me a shout. Willing to let it go for cheap if you’re going to pick it up lol.

Oh yeah back to my point, if you’re on original guides even without symptoms and you’re over 100K don’t press the engine hard until its changed

I’d love to know what actually happened. Guides are guess, sure, but it sounds like you threw a rod or something.

Fair point didn’t think of that…i’ve involved myself in reading about the chain issue on these trucks so my mind automatically went there. I’m not sure if i’d ever know the root cause as i’m not even going to bother taking it to a shop to be torn down. It’s in excellent condition otherwise so I’m hoping someone would take it off my hands and throw a used engine in it. Kinda want to let it find a new good home. I’ve had seat covers on the truck from new. Well taken care of. All other components are good on it. Ill post pics soon.

Do you know where the oil was coming from? Did something punch a hole through the block ?

My money is on Uncle Rodney came knocking, it'll happen. JLR will sell you a remanufactured engine for a decent price.
