I agree, I think the alternator is the issue. At least it was when my LR3 did the same thing, luckily I was literally pulling into my driveway.

So I need some help with part numbers.
According to land rover, I need part number LR65246.

I order Denso LR065246 from fcp euro.
After waiting 1.5 weeks, this is what they sent me.

Is fcp's cross reference wrong?

Mounting holes don't line up...if top bolt is in, the 2 lower bolt holes are about 1/8 too high

Battery wire is on wrong side. No big deal, it reaches.

Harness plug is on wrong side. It barely reaches, but it's also a different shape female plug on alternator; It's more rectangular and has 3 pins. Car harness is oval and has 1 pin.

I'm not sure what to do.

Ask them to send another (correct) one.
Or are they all wrong because they have bad cross references?

The Denso on the Advance Auto website looks exactly like your old one but only gives the Advance Auto number. I would say you got the wrong cross reference. Atlantic British references the same number and their picture matches your old alternator as well.

Assuming we are talking about 2010-2013 LR4 with V8 engine, Microcat is showing LR023421, which supercedes to LR065246, according to the dealer websites.

I'm seeing a bunch of different numbers all supposedly interchanging. For example, RM Euro is showing LR091107 when you search for LR065246; allegedly interchanging with LR011231, LR023405, LR023421, LR065246, LR065865. (!!??)
EDIT: The RME part number list is a mix of 4.0L V6 part numbers, and 5.0L V8:
LR011231 (V6), LR023405 (V6), LR023421 (V8), LR065246 (V8), LR065865 (V6).

AutohausAZ shows both LR091107 ($280) and C2D42135 ($243) when searching for LR065246 (which shows "temporarily unavailable").

All the photos look the same, they all match your old unit. Seems like FCP screwed up, but it's also possible all the vendors have the wrong photo? I'd like to find out what vendor can supply the correct unit, as I want to buy one for proactive replacement (125kmi on the original, it's probably on borrowed time).

Interesting. The denso box my new alternator came in has part number LR023421G on it.
It is physically not a equal/interchange to LR065246...so not sure how it could supercede.

Maybe Denso is making parts that aren't actually interchangeable. Very concerning since if I ask FCP to send another (overnight), they will send the exact same thing. This makes me question if any site selling denso LR065246 would actually be correct.

I also notice the (generic) picture on the FCP site does not match the part I received. The harness plug is in a different position.

Besides ordering and waiting for shipping from another vendor, my only other quick option is a rebuilt duralast from the local autozone, for even more money. It has a lifetime warranty, but replacing every 6 months when it fails in inconvinent locations, doesn't sound like fun.

I just want my rover working again. Not only has it been disabled for almost 2 weeks, but i could also really use it since we just got a good amount of snow dumped around here.

Edit: to add more confusion, both the denso box and alternator have part number DAN986 on them. Which takes me to this picture, that matches the (wrong) alternator I received.

I can't help but think this is a denso manufacturing issue. But how am I to be the first to realize (and complain)?

Can you post a photo of the Denso box / label that shows both LR023421G and DAN986?

Seems LR023421G should be correct, and DAN986 is wrong... has to be a disconnect somewhere.

Sure. I even included part of the packing slip as reference.
