Check Engine Code Help

Hey everybody, I was recently given my older brothers LR3 as he got a new car for graduation. It is a 2005 LR3 SE V6. About 90k miles. It runs like new, and he kept it in great shape. Last week I filled the truck up, and I figured it would be okay to put 89 octane instead of the normal 93 I put in it. Right when I started the truck, the check engine light came on. I took it to the Dealer in the morning, and the code is p2096. The receipt says "bank 1 post cat. lean. fault will not clear, will need new cat. and o2 sensor."

Has anybody ever had code P2096? How did y'all fix it? I don't think I'm running lean because fuel mileage is the same.
I am out of warranty so trying not to spend much on fixing it.

Also, dealer tried to clear code, but had no luck.

First, I am not sure why after so many years you have decided to run 89 instead of 93, not smart and no, it didn't cause 1 bank to run lean nore do you need all the crap they are telling you to get.
If you find a non-dealer Rover shop and have then check it you will be told a different, less expensive story.

I've only had the car for a month, it was a "hand me down" from my older brother. My brother did always put 91+ octane in it. I was told it was okay to put 89 octane in it from another LR3 owner, so I figured it wouldn't hurt once.
There is a European car specialist down the street, so will run it in there when I have the time.

It is safe to drive with this problem, right?

thanks for your input.
I've only had the car for about a month, it was a "hand me down" that my older brother drove. He always put 91+ octane in. A friend of mine who has a LR3 said he always uses 89, so I figured it would be okay to put it in to save a few bucks.
There is a European Auto Specialst down the street so I will take it to them and have them look at it.
Until then, it is safe to drive it in this condition, correct?

Simply googling that fault code you may come up with some answers...Due to the OBD2 requirements that code means the same thing on every car. Some of the things I read lead me to believe you simply have a faulty 02 sensor. The catalytic convertors are warrentied much longer then the original vehicle warrenty (I think its 100k?) so if after the sensor replacement you deem it necassary to change the cat you may not have to pay for it..
