Considering Purchase

Hey Everyone,

I am new here...first post. Ever since I was a kid I have always wanted a Land Rover and now i'm really considering one.

I am the kind of person who drives a car until it dies. I know Land Rover has always had reliability issues. What do you think of the long term reliability of a new LR4? I'm thinking at least 10yrs/200,000K miles.

Also, are there any good US Land Rover Magazines?

- Land Rover has always had reliability issues --- current owner may not like that statement : ) but that's what I've been told over and over again by people who does not even owned one!!!

So that being said I am also new here and considering 2011 LR4 and keep it as long as possible. Current owners please share your opinion about your experience with LR4!!!

It's very true that most people who says Land rover is very unreliable have never owned one.

It's true that reliability used to be pretty bad. I own a 2000 discovery too and I am about to pull the engine out and replace it. It's got a cracked block from overheating and that's very typical issue on this engine. It's caused by pool outdated block casting process used at the factory.

Those days are gone. Yes there are some little software glitches and some elecrical componets failing prematurely but you won't have major engine or transmission failures before you see 200K miles. Since Ford owned it and now the financial backing of Tata motors, they are really improving the quality of cars they are putting out lately and quality of interior fit and finish when compared to LR3 does show this effort.

It only took few years for Hyundai motors from being a joke at the bottom of JDpower list to the top spot.

I cant say much yet seeing that i have only had mine for about one week. But its already in service dept for malfunctioning radio. Hopefully just a software thing, but they had it since friday am, and no answer to a cause yet---but it is reproducible for them.

I was like you, always wanted a LR since I was a little kid growing up with an old Series II farm vehicle. I have owned/leased 6 Toyotas exclusively for the last 12 years or so, and finally made the jump to the LR in Jan. And I love it. Best vehicle I have ever owned, full stop.
We have racked up a quick 7k miles, and the only issue I have seen is a loose ds wiper. From reading the forum here, most issues owners seem to have are electrical, specifically, nav unit/radio. I personally did not buy a LR for the radio (though it is great, and I have had no problems) but if that is a primary concern, I would look elsewhere.
My greatest complaint would have to be the dog cage accessory for the cargo space, it is impossible to put in/out to access the 3rd row seats.
Go for it. You wont regret it....

LR4ME,

i personally did not buy the LR4 specifically for its radio. However, I do believe that the radio should turn on, and stay on, regardless of the car one buys.

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound snarky. I totally agree, when you pay this much for a vehicle, everything should work out of the gate, and keep working. My point was more that the issues seem to be more about electronics than mechanicals, and mostly seem fixable with updates/patches.

I was thinking the same a few years ago when I was considering a RRS - reliability issues scared me. I ended up leasing RRS just so I make sure I can return it after 3 years and not get stuck with a badly depreciating asset. In those 3 years I had no problem at all. I am going to go for LR4 with no doubts. I think quality is much better than before. Reading some auto industry magazine a few months ago, research shows that perception of quality lags actual quality improvements by about 5 years, which would mean that today's quality concerns are based on early LR3s
