I would have replaced my engine after I bought it in '23, but I didn't need one. You probably bought it with the coolant problem preexisting.

The LR4's are all worth more in actuality than they are on paper and that is a good thing because it brings the cost down. In my case from $60k MSRP 13 years ago.
I bought it back in 2018 with about 37K miles on it. I checked maintenance records from original owner and they did the typical oil changes prior to that (9K, 24K, 37K intervals - not ideal but what can you do). Have kept up with all maintenance at dealer and independent Land Rover shops since then (between 5K and 7.5K between oil changes). Originally had all the coolant stuff addressed at 67K miles (water pump, crossover pipes, back heater pipe, gaskets, seals, etc.)

That lasted about 8 months and 7K miles when I noticed the coolant reserve tank was empty (coolant light came on at start but then immediately went off). Filled up the coolant tank and took it to the shop and they pressure tested it and didn't find anything. Two months and 1K miles later same thing. Took it back and this time they replaced the rear heater pipe. Has happened a couple of times since then and mechanic told me they pressure tested and found no leaks and speculated it might be signs of a head gasket.

So that's where I'm at today. Holding out hope it's not the head gasket and previous mechanics didn't do a thorough job trying to find the source of the leak. Hopefully a new mechanic I'm taking it to can definitely confirm if it's the engine or not (starting with another pressure test and then doing a combustion test). Just preparing myself for what comes next if it is the engine, but I'm inclined to go ahead and replace the engine if need be.

Check with your local dealership. There's a massive price reduction on JLR reman engines.
Any idea what the price drop is for just engine itself (not including labor)? Not sure if the dealer will give me just the price of the engine or an overall quote for the full job. I assume the $25K I was quoted to do the engine replacement (by an independent specialist) was based on typical engine pricing, so trying to get a relative sense of any savings I could expect / ask for.

Its hard to believe the head gasket would fail. If the same shop did all that maintenance (coolant system) then I suspect they aren't doing it right. Maybe they are making mistakes or wanting to get the work for an engine R&R.

Hope you’re right. I don’t suspect they are trying to get work for an engine replacement, but I do suspect they did a bad job with the coolant stuff initially and don’t want to admit it. Hoping the new shop can sort it out properly. I’ll report back when I learn more.
