My 2002 Discovery II drives well, but when on the freeway it won't get into 4th gear. Eventually got this error code: P0741. I also got P0705 error code. My transmission drives well, so does this mean it's a less costly fix? Thx S
Sounds like you may have a couple of bad sensors or some wires have shorted out going to the transmission. Shouldn't be that hard to fix.
From the RAVE... P0741 - Torque converter lock-up clutch fault P0705 - Gear position switch, incorrect outputs You can try for free... - cycle through the selectors and check that a) the LED on the Gearshift lights up for each position and b) the LCD in the instrument pack matches what gear you've selected. - readjust XYZ switch per the RAVE manual. - spray some contact cleaner spray in XYZ switch connector plug then reattach - check your wire loom to the XYZ switch isn't shorting out or has exposed wires.
Update: Took my vehicle into my local mechanic. They could see a drop in RPMs in 4th gear. So I was getting to 4th gear, which is good. I don't think anyone will take my transmission apart to fix the torque converter. So, I'll drive it until I get major fault with the transmission. Then, swap it out for a new-used one. 1500-1800 dollars he said.
