DPF Delete Kit: Worth it or risky modification?

Hello everyone.

Has anyone here installed a DPF delete kit on their diesel vehicle? I’m trying to understand the real-world pros and cons beyond the usual claims from sellers.

Some people say it improves performance, fuel economy, and reduces maintenance costs, while others warn about legal issues, smoke increase, and potential engine damage. I’d like to hear from those who have actually used it long term.

Did you notice any reliability changes, check engine light issues, or inspection problems?

Also, was the tuning process straightforward? Advice or experiences would help me decide whether it is worth considering or avoiding it entirely.

Interesting topic. My brother had that done 2 years ago on ford 6.4l, twin turbo at a very reputable shop, (as well as oversized pistons, egr delete, remachined the heads…)
And what I can tell you is more hp, more torque, better on fuel… its a well tuned rocket work horse. Wish I found the diesel option in Canada for my LR…. And I’d do the same.

No experience in this matter but I do know enough that I would not attempt this if I lived in a state that requires emissions inspections. The risk of it not passing inspection down the road would be too great. Unless the following three conditions were met 1) the shop has experience in the DPF delete, 2) shop warranties against check engine lights for at least a year & 3) the shop is authorized to do state inspections

I’ve not done my D5 diesel yet but will be doing later in the year when my warranty runs out. I have done my Audi A6 and it was such an incredible transformation of positives, no lag, it picks up immediately, more power, speed, better economy. It’s the drivability and lack of lag that makes it so much better to drive. I love it.
However, yes there is more smoke and ALOT of smell. I leave my garage door open for a few moments before I even get out of the vehicle. It is not a pleasant smell and it can cling to your clothes. That is a very noticeable drawback to doing the delete.
I’m happy with my decision and plan on doing my discovery asap but that smell could be a deal breaker for some.

If its smoking then they tuned it too rich. It can be de-smogged and run as clean as a whistle if done right and you want that. People still roll coal from time to time but not so much around the SW US. If you look up in the sky and see blue streaks from aircraft that is 100% pollution that happens to be the same color as clouds and not black. Nobody cares. Might as well go after the big fish but that isn't how it works lol.

Don’t get me wrong, It’s only smoking when you stomp on it and when it’s first started in -20c or less. You wouldn’t know it’s smoking at any other time but my point is still valid, it’s more than non delete vehicle. The smell however is absolutely more obnoxious than standard. My tuning was completed by Darkside developments who specialise in diesel tuning, they were awesome. I just wish they worked on LR too.
I’m still 100% happy with my choice to delete and the results I’ve got. I just wanted the OP to know the one thing that could spoil that if he wasn’t prepared.

It sounds rich. I've never owned a diesel so maybe that is how it is but would like one. Probably a Cummins in the RAM or the Powerstroke in the F350 4X4. Gobs of power. Back not long ago big rigs didn't even have that much power.

I have to admit, the F350 Super Duty Diesel 6.4l diesel is a beast. Not so smoky and smelly, except on startup. But noisy and a very "truck like" ride. I prefer the creature comforts of the LR... just want more power without the "pretty luxury" of the RR.
