As you may know I'm new to the LR crowd.... I was under the car over the weekend changing the oil and realized that Land Rover is still using a thermo mechanical fan.
My question is has anyone here replaced that fan assy. with an electric fan. I would say thats worth atleast 1-2 miles per gallon.
If anyone has done this let me know what size fan you used, what temp. switch, or maybe theres a kit out there.

Thanks for the help,

John

I suspect that there is a sensor on that fan that will signal the ECU to shut down and never ever start again if you disable it :)

I have been monitoring lots of LR3/Disco3/related forums, and no one has ever reported a problem with the fan, including those guys in Dubai, Morocco, Sahara, Australia, etc...

Maybe I'm missing something, My LR3 has a thermo mechanical fan.....which only fully engages when the temp reaches a certain level. I have never seen one where it sends a signal to the ECU, it would be hard to put a switch on the fan!
Anyway my fan is working fine and I'm not worried about running hot. The thing is because the fan clutch is progressive and constantly being driven by the engine, it's robbing power which will = fuel economy.

Just a thought, thanks for the help.

All I know is that I've gone wheeling in 113 degree heat with the air con cranked and driving about 5 mph on a trail for hours and hours, and the needle never moved anywhere near the red zone.

The LR3 has a fan with an electrical connector. If you took off your fan the truck would know and not be happy. The connector is on the left side(drivers) of the shroud if you don't believe me. I don't think removing the fan gives that big of a boost in fuel economy anyhow. I took the fan off of my Nissan and had no change in economy. Bottom line is that you can't take the fan off even if you wanted too.

Let's be real here - in a vehicle that weighs almost 3 tons and has the aerodynamics of a cinder block, we're going to worry about how much drag the fan is going to add to a 300HP engine? Here's the answer - not enough drag for me to chuck the warrranty for a $60,000 truck out the window. :) Don't think for one second a dealer would see that mod and from that point on, deny any warranty claim they could possibly attribute to it, no matter how tenuous the logic!

And 1-2 MPG by replacing the fan? If it were that easy to give the engine a (assuming an average of 15 MPG) 10% mileage increase, I think the engineers at LR would have done it long ago. 10% is a HUGE increase - most mechanical engineers would give their eye teeth to improve the efficiency of anything by that kind of margin!

Throw a couple extra PSI in your tires when you're around town and you'll recoup the loss. :)
