Have a 2014 RRS SC v6 and did a head gasket replacement. Removing the cylinder head prior to removing the exhaust manifold as indicated in the repair manual is preferrable when possible, and heat shields can also be removed from the cylinder head when out of the vehicle as well. JLR 303-1653 - 12mm 6 sided (spline or sometimes called ribe) bit socket & 303-1492 alignment sleeve or alternatives are available on Amazon. A Torx-Plus 55 (TP) is the correct tool, just be cautious when using inexpensive sets as they can be slightly undersized and this is one instance where a solid fit is preferrable. When measuring the greatest distance across two opposing splines the JLR tool is 12mm.
After removing the cylinder heads, I soaked the exhaust manifold bolts with penetrating oil overnight and cleaned the bolt heads thoroughly before easily removing with a TP-50.
