floor boards, aluminum or steel?

Hey Gang...

This may seem like a stupid question, but are the floor boards on a Disco 1 1997 steel or aluminum? I was cleaning the carpets because they are saturated with water from the weather warming up, and as I lifted them I noticed this horid surface rust. I cleaned it away, and vaccumed up the paint that scraped off, and looked for holes (none). I then sprayed the area with a rust converter and then a rust inhibitor, even though there is still some water in the carpets. My question is, if it is aluminum should i worry less? Or, if it is steel should I start to really worry?

Pietro,
Sounds like you struck rust, typical for steel floors that keep getting wet, same as the bulk head.

magnet...man am i stupid...lol, i should have paid more attention in physics...

the rust is just on top, and wipes off with a cloth, so it hasnt gone through...just a pain in the ass to keep it clean and dry for now.

Pete - you will keep getting rust if you do not pull the foam pad from the truck, it is a one piece deal so take a razor blade and cut the pad to remove, it will take some time for it to dry, like a month or so and clean up the floor board and paint it, then after the snow season reinstall the foam pad and if you have no actuall leak you will be good to go.

my truck has a small water leak up near the fire wall on the passenger side footwell, the pad is one big sponge, put it on the driveway and walk on it to squeeze out the water but you will need to hang it up and let air and gravity to the rest of the work -Andy

Pull all the insulation and carpet out.

Steel floors, baby! Then POR15 and Line-X or whatever, and you're good to go.
