Fuel cap loose or missing?

Mr. Gore couldn't respond as the cabin noise in the G5 was unusually high but I'm sure I can speak for his gas cap concerns.

At any rate, the LR3 is back and all is well. Hopefully, for a long time. The ride height sensors were replaced and all is quiet with the suspension. The gas cap was replaced as well. the gasket didn't hold pressure. May have been creased a bit in the cold weather.

The dealer continues to jump through hoops to satisfy.

Love the truck, it just needs to stop the chicken little BS.

Well there's a happy story.

Tip - keep just a tad of silicone lube on the gas filler tube/cap seal. Turns in nicer too. I did that last night with ours.

First time I've done it to a gas cap though. In fact all moving parts, seals, hinges, linkages, etc. need to treated or lubricated in some way. No matter who maintains the car, including the best of shops, this service detail is rarely done.

At first blush, lubing the gas cap seems a bit excessive. However, I'm pretty sure the gasket on mine got a light crinkle in it when it was below 0 here. This caused a trip to the dealer, parts being ordered and so on. If there was a dab of lube there's little doubt it would have been fine.

Newer EVAP monitoring systems use a pump to pressurize the system. Previous systems used engine vacuum to put a vacuum on the system and then closed it to see if pressure rose. The gas cap loose warning on the dash was done to get rid of alot of false leak concerns. If the check engine light is coming on or the gas cap loose message is on for too long there is most likely a leak.

FWIW I went through this same problem. Multiple trips to the dealer, gas cap replaced twice (all after the gas tank recall). So, for me, they just didn't do something right in the recall. Either a replaced coponent was faulty or it was not installed correctly.

One of my problems ended up being a very strong gas smell after fillup on hot days. I heard all kinds of things about how you shouldn't fill the tank up on a hot day because of the difference in fuel temperature in the ground vs. air temperture (expansion and such), but the end result is I wasn't filling this tank different than any other gas tank I've ever filled so this was a first.

They were good about it, but I did have to keep bringing it in and they finally dropped the tank and found fuel residue on top of it. I can't remember what they replaced/repaired. But, once they saw the fuel residue they knew I wasn't making it up and it was quickly fixed.

The service rep told me many things I have forgotten about how complex, and perhaps over-engineered, our fuel vapor recovery system is compared to previous rovers...
