all - listen to Joey on this crucial issue!
The disco engine was originally an US Buick design but LR has tinkered with it so much as to make it a mid-Atlantic bastard with very peculiar, particular and picky British tastes in the fuel department. Specifically, the fuel-mapping in the ECU is set for European grades in fuel which are much higher than ours; 92 is the minimum that you should be putting in the tank; and here's why: given the weak mid-range mapping with our normal grade fuels (i.e., grades that do not even exist over in England) your engine will start to operate with very high internal temperatures that in turn (and over time) can cause the sleaves that line your cylinders to shift - with critical damage resulting. Also, exhaust valves have been known to suffer from this (a not too severe problem I inherited, on one valve, from the previous two turkeys who owned my distressed 97 Disco).
Don't fool around with this - and if you need to hear it from the Rover engine experts over in the UK go to RPI's website.
