My wife is looking to replace her leased vehicle and has a interest in Land Rovers. To be honest, I was/am skeptical because I've heard some bad stuff about reliability of these machines. She's interested in a used LR3 - probably a 2006.

I've already been doing some research here and the information has both helped, and both encouraged as well as discouraged in several ways.

Seems common issues with these are the lurching issue, front bushings, as well as clogged sunroof vents, and premature wear on brakes because of the weight of the vehicle. The good thing is that I do my own work, and it seems like there's nothing exceedingly difficult in performing basic maintenance tasks such as brakes. It also sounds like the other issues (except brakes), should have already been addressed at this point.

Anyway, I guess I'll cut the intro here and leave the rest for the more appropriate LR3 forum.

Welcome to the forum. Keep in mind 99% of all vehicle forums are about issues, very rarely will you see a post like (and this is my car, but you will not see this often):

Wow can you believe my 1992 Buick Roadmaster 350ci engine auto trans has 265,000 miles on it, and in the 10 years I have owned it I have put less than $3,000 in it including tires... Amazing Wish they made cars like this today.

Or (again my Vehicle)

Wow my 1997 Land Rover Discovery is running like it did the day I bought it used 7 years ago. If you don't count upgrades I have done less work to this Rover than most friends have done to there Lexus' or Honda's for that matter. Sure I break things, but that is because it is covered in mud and I never wash it. I also off road it 3 or 4 times a year. Got to love the reliability of a Land Rover.

So my advise is to take all forum info with a pound of salt.

If you are looking for a commuter vehicle I would advise aginst it. Gas milage will eat you alive, as well as wear and tear of city driving. I have an 05 LR3 and I love it...I bought it for backbacking trips and rock climbing ventures that are quite off the trail. Its a great suv, but just know that not all LR3's are alike. I have had none of the problems discussed in these forums related to 05 LR3 stuff. Bought it brand new and only visit the shop for matinence. That doesn't really mean anything, just lucked out i guess.

Bottom line...they are built well, reliable if maintained properly, and they are a blast off road. I believe you really do get what you pay for. Good luck, and PM me if you have any other questions.

Look, you are either a Land Rover owner or you are not. People spend too much time analyzing whether to buy or not. All of the LR's are unique, and have a personality, much like each owner. If you are wondering if it makes sense to buy one, you may as well ask whether you should buy a Porche. This is about a vehicle with a heritage, personality and design, not about economics. If economics is the issue, buy a Volvo or Lexus, but if this is about passion, life and design, then Land Rover. I didn't get this point until my second one, as I swore I wouldn't buy one again after my 1999 D2, but with my 05 LR3, I can't picture myself owning another vehicle.

Life is most fulfilled when your passion is met, and if you are called to the Land Rover, give in...then get to know other LR owners, use your vehicle off road and taste the heritage of the vehicle. It tastes good, and it puts you in touch with life and the incredible earth.

I know this is a little over the top, but....I mean it. :hello:
