You're on the right track not using a highlift for that sort of thing. kudo's.

Don't scrimp on cheap tin jacks. I have when I was young and foolish, and learned from the mistake.
Consider this, it's your head and body under the car. If you want to skimp on tools, do it with tools that your life isn't dependent on.

If you have a Northern Hydraulics near you, you can get a good 3ton jack for about $150 from them. I don't think there's one near you though.
You might try looking at places that sell Blackhawk, or Lincoln I think is another good one. Take a look at your local NAPA store.
