This has happened to me 4 or 5 times in the past year. (only owned my LR for about 2years) Its a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 113k miles automatic.

From reading online I understand this to mean it has gone into "Limp Home Mode" and has detected a fault in the automatic transmission. The remedy is turn off the engine, and restart to see if the fault is corrected. Everytime I have done this it starts right up, the modes no longer flash and eveything seems fine.

My question is, Is this just a quirk? or is something really wrong?

It is "limp mode" but it may be a voltage, transmission, fuse, ECU problem. Since it happens off and on I would say it's a voltage problem of some sort. If the ECU under your seat has gotten moisture in it the contacts may be getting worn and the light may flash.
