My first Rover and a question

Hi all-
My name is Brandon and I live in Nashville. I just sent the check to a car dealer to buy my first Rover. Its a 2002 Range Rover. I am so excited as this is my dream to own a Range Rover (well and a Shelby Cobra), but anyway I have a question I probably should have sought the answer to before now. I am betting the reccomended octane of fuel is 93. My question being, is that correct and if so what are the consequnces of running a low grade?

The vehicle will run fine on regular unleaded. I have used both and the gas mileage is better with the premium fuel but compared to the additional cost it works costing more. I have put 35K on my HSE and have never had any problems or performance issue with reg. unleaded.(unlike the Porsche.......runs like crap on reg & mid grade....can only use the premo!)

on out HSE, we average 13 city, 17 highway. in regards to the gasoline, imho, you should stay away from regular. the engine was was designed to run on premium and you wont be saving that much by using it. if your engine starts to ping, repairs would be expensive!

I have a 99 HSE. I get 13 city and about 18 highway. As far as fule quality I have put even Mexican fule on it and It runs very well. I have put by mistake super unleaded which I usually pump to my M3 and runs a bit better when in sport mode but not worth the extra cash as for how fast it runs out. I normally pump a regular and premium unleaded mix. 50%/50% on both grades and some how get better results or maybe my imagination on my milage to the gallon.

I just bought a 2002 and had the same question. The dealer told me to run only 93 octane. The same salesman told me two years ago that 89 was OK. The owners manual says 90 is OK. I had a 98 disco that I ran 87 in all the time, put 180,000 miles on it with no problem, it was supposed to have high test in it also.

So I guess I'm going to try 87 octane and if the engine doesn't knock or ping it should be OK. It runs fine on 89. The compression ratio isn't that high so I don't know why they want the higher octane.

The Rangie will run fine on lower octane gas, but some older Rangies may suffer knocking sounds from the engine using lower octane.
The reason high octane is recommended is because supposidly the 4.0 & 4.6 engines are really bad for carbon buildup. Lower octane produces more carbon buildup, so using higher octane doesn't build up as much. That's the theory anyways.... Regardless I love my Rangie and she only get's the best!.... I also plan on keeping it forever so that kinda weighs in also.

I run midgrade all of the time no pings knocks ect.. I get 14 mpg (with some mods of course) in the 4.slow.
