RUD 4X4 Grip

Purchased RUD Grip 4x4 chains direct from mfcr. Shipped to me within a couple of days. Price was about $125 total for one set. I have 255/15/19. Size indicated by RUD is 0157.

I fitted them on the rears just for testing and they go on super easy (Im a total novice)

Going to Mammoth in a couple of weeks so hoping not to use them, but will have them in case.

Still concerned about front vs. rear wheel mounting? I have trolled various boards, asked the dealer and anyone else that would listen...no real answer on where to mount. I guess I'll go with the safe bet which is to follow the manual and go with the front tires which will provde better grip for steering as well. Again, hope I never have to use them.

Last time I used chains was about 18months ago just before I moved from Norway to the US were we had a $60k Freelander (huge Norwegian prices/taxes). We always had snow and Ice and -15c or so temp up in the hills during winter and spending most weekends driving to the cabin for skiing we had no choice but put the chains on in some areas. However the set of winter studded tyres did for most situations, but when we had the chains fitted they were on the front only(as 99% of cars did). During the summer we fitted BFG's and they did us proud of course. Not sure if you can fit studded tyres here in the US but for us in Texas not much call anyway even if I could get them for the LR3.

As I said in an earlier e-mail, the chains fit on the front tires perfectly. I am in the same boat regarding front vs. rear mounting of chains, nobody has given me an answer on why LR wants the chains mounted on the front. I do prefer putting them on the front becuase it provides better grip for steering, but if also want to mount my second set on the back, if needed for additional traction, I would like to know why LR states this as a no-no.

Hey all, got my Rud chains today. There a is a problem. As Davez26 has stated above
clearance is almost zero. To make sure I pulled them off and tried a second time
and got the same result. I don't feel comfortable running these chains on the front
as it might catch and either break the chain or worse. Anybody found a reason we
can't run these on the rear yet ? Can't bring myself to spend $700 on dealer chains.
BTW chains fit good 255/60-18, just scary close to A-arms. Has anybody
ran these chains with success??

Hey Duckdive,

I drove over 40 miles in Yosemite with these chains on last year; extremely curvy roads and they were not a problem. I have the 19 inch tires and wheels.

Thanks pb, just to be clear you say you ran them on the fronts right?? And you saw
the clearance between the chain and A-arm and you were comfortable with that ?

Does anyone have similar experience with the 18" wheels? I'm ready to pull the trigger with Rud (direct from them) but want that warm fuzzy that there are no clearance problems...THanks!

Yes, I ran them on the front tires. Yes I was saw the clearance between the chain and A-arm. Comfortable...yes! From my point of view, the clearance could be 1 milimeter and that would be enough if nothing touches or rubs. If those chains break or come loose then there going to damage something not matter what. This is an assumption, but the Land Rover chains would have to follow the same design of the Rud chains. I mean the way the Rud chains are designed and how they fit on the inside of the tires, I really don't see how you could find a better fitting limited clearance chain. Given that Land Rover outsourced the chain specs to an outside vendor it would not surprise me if Rud makes Land Rover chains. By the way Rud is a German company. Go to their european or USA web pages...."Leading the World in Chain Technology". I will place a bet they make the Land Rover chains.

DD - I just ordered a set from Rud for my 18's...They were #0141. For some reason I seem to recall that the 19's used 0157? The Rud folks seemed to know exactly what I needed. We'll see how tight the fit is when they get here next week...I'm out of town until the 26th but would be willing to grab some pics and get them posted/linked if that would help?
