07 LR3 SE, 16k miles. At a regular service, the dealer tells me my rear brakes (including rotors) are 80% worn and I should replace them. Cost is $551.75 parts/labor. Front pads/rotors are 60% worn.

Is this normal wear? 80% seems very high for only 16k miles.
I've searched the forums and see that people are getting 30k+ easily on the pads/rotors.

BTW, this is my wife's car, city/hwy driving only, no off road (I know, it's a shame).

Advice much appreciated.

If your wife drives anything like mine - yes! Its a 3 tonne truck! It take vision beyond the rear bumper of the car inf front of you to anticipate stops to get more miles out of the brakes (and better gas millage). So many drivers don't realize that the right foot can occasionally rest between accelerating and braking ;-)

Did you search brake pad under this LR3 forum before asking? The search tool for "brake pad" under LR3 advanced search gives 244 results. On the first page I found this useful thread from last year.
http://www.landroverworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11992&highlight=brake
There are plenty more that would assure you that your wife's results are not too far from normal depending upon use and location (hills) etc. Rotors last longer than pads, absent any fault demanding replacement.
Not to be unhelpful, but it strikes me as odd that we build this database and few folks mine it for the collective wisdom before posting "what tires do I buy" and such. I have posted and emailed around the procedure on brake jobs for LR3 with specs that I found elsewhere (not original with me), for one example. Many DIY folks posted advice, and many of us encourage independent mechanics for this type of work. Tires advice exists aplenty and on another member's own hosted website for which links frequently appear here under tires threads. Sorry for the rant, fellow LR3 owners.
Good luck on those brakes, tell the dealer thanks but no.

mustbeaudi ,
I actually spend a great deal of time trolling this board but rarely post. I've seen the posts you refer to, while there may be 244 of them, not all of them apply to my question. For example, I saw the post on the procedures/specs but I'm far from a mechanic so it wasn't helpful. I'm aware of the search function; rest assured I used it. But, I had a specific question related to my specifc car and was hopeful I'd get a helpful response without the attitude.

Now we've both spent more time than it's worth addressing an irrelevant point. In the future, I'd hope that you and/or others aren't as ******* people who post but instead, just provide a simple response. The last thing I want to do, and I would think that you want to encourage others to do, is lodge disclaimers in a question about all the resources that were considered before deciding to post on this forum so as to assure a few folks that the poster has done their homework first.

That's my rant and I'm sticking to it.

As to the brakes, I did tell LR thanks but no thanks and will be ordering parts from British Atlantic (which I found, wait for it...., through the search function).

wait for it...., through the search function.

Now you're in the spirit of it! You also figured it out using search, including the AB source. This was, of course, not personal and much less about your question than the "Hi, I need new tires, which to buy?" set. Still, your 3 post history suggested that maybe you had not spent much time reading so I set off on my merry way. Never mind me.

Have you checked to see if the "mustbeaudi" handle is available on the http://www.momsminivan.com/ forum? ;-)

Oh, that might have just crossed the line....

For centerfield - they may be that worn, depending on driving style, but I find the measurements sometimes a little "off"... ie, a friend of mine had his VW in for servicing about a year ago and the advisor mentioned he had 10% left on his rear pads - he did nothing about it at the time (rear brakes on a FWD car aren't nearly as involved in the stopping procedure and the car felt fine to him). It was in again for an oil change almost 12 months to the day (roughly 20k miles - he's sales, on the road a bit) and he was informed that he was down to 25% remaining on the rear pads.... something didn't quite add up!

I'm obviously not saying it's the case here, but you can always get a second opinion if it seems suspicious....

On LR3 brake wear, results truly vary. I put over 50k on the rear pads and got them changed (no rotors required) by the dealer for $300....a relative bargain. My front pads, now at 63,500 miles or so...still have 3 or 4 mm left on 'em. They are coming due soon, but pretty good wear I'd say!

....I use Command Shift fairly often and I always use Sport Mode when I'm not on an Interstate doing 55+.
