Hey guys its the same old thing . 98 disco le (95650 miles) thought the front u-joint on the rig was shot. Same synthoms like every one else. Thunk noise when shifting in to reverse, acceleration, and stoping same old noise. Suspenion guy said not the joint maybe the trans. Think a flush will help?

If you have replaced all the U-joint most of the thunk will go away, but the transfer case and transmission do have some play in them.

after replacing all of my u-joints I have come to a few conclusions:
1. yes they did help - especially the 'let off the gas thunk'
2. if I could just slow the hell down and not always be in a hurry and actually wait for the vehicle to relax (ie not shifting into reverse with potential energy stored in the springs from the slowing action of pressing the brakes - lurching forward) - the thunk is reduced considerably

I believe Joey is right - its just the way it is

I went under the truck and notice zerk fittings on the joints. Greased them up so hopefully that will help. Stock u-joint dont have zerks correct? Last owner must have had them done. Rig does have 95650 miles on it. Thanks guys.

Yes, your 98 does have zerk fittings... and if they haven't been greased it is time to change them.
